After setting USR in 4x8 loss, Roosevelt takes 4x4

At left, Holmwood Tech JAM's Bobby Gaye Wilkins raises the baton as she finishes off her team's 8:41.92 4x8 win, avenging last year's loss. But Roosevelt still crushes USR with 8:43.12. At right, Afia Charles hands off to Tasha Stanley as ER takes the 4x4 in 3:37.16. Photos John Nepolitan

Top Highlights -
  • New USR 8:43.12 4x800 for the girls of Eleanor Roosevelt MD, in a runner-up effort to Holmwood Tech JA's 8:41.92, second fastest in Penn Relays history. Roosevelt slashes over seven seconds from the 2002 8:50.41 by Boys & Girls NY, becoming the first US team to dip under 8:50, and doing it by a huge margin.
  • Eleanor Roosevelt came back in 4x400 and outlasted everyone for a new US#1 3:37.16, #7 all-time (#3 school).
  • The home state took 2 of the 3 boys distance events. Germantown Friends pulled away on the last leg for a US#2 10:11.54 triumph in the DMR, while Boyertown's Mark Dennin ran away from everyone late for a 8:30.11 victory in the 3k.
  • After the pack crawled through 800 in 2:13, everyone kicked hard at the end, but Cory Leslie OH had the best move in the last 300 and held off Robby Andrews NJ"s final rush, 4:12.76-4:12.82.
  • Edwin Allen JAM rolls to a 44.79 in the Girls 4x100 Championship, #6 in relays history, with Vere Tech 2nd in 45.23. Top US team is Landstown VA in 4th with 46.07.
  • Jersey SP stars Nike Vena and Mike Alleman dominate the shot, as expected. Vena hits 63-06 for the win on his 3rd throw, to Alleman's 62-01
  • With Jason Walton's super 1:51.8 anchor, Hillsborough NJ led boys 4x800 qualifying with 7:47.44. Cleveland Heights OH was a no-show, but 7 broke 7:55 in the final heat.
