Boys by SteveU - One of the craziest and best finishes of the night came in the boys 800 SMR, where Long Beach Poly had rolled to a national record and easy win here last year. This time the clocking was nearly five seconds slower, but the outcome was in doubt until the final moment, as Crenshaw (Los Angeles) surged ahead for the 1:33.53 victory over Bishop O’Dowd CA (1:33.68) and St. Bernard CA (1:33.69).
It was sweet vindication for the Crenshaw quartet, which had to wonder if they belonged in the 4x200 final earlier after winning their opening (of four) heat in a state-leading 1:28.38. This time, Noel Grisby, Antwan Tyus, Gregory Ducre, and anchor DeAnthony Thomas didn’t have to worry about any other heat winners.
Girls - The girls of James Logan CA won the shorter of the two medley relays with a US#1 1:44.51, anchored by star sprinter Thandi Stewart (left) on the 400 leg. Stewart’s teammates got her the baton with a slight lead, and despite a tight wrap on an ailing right hamstring, she turned a 54.9 anchor that managed to hold off Cesar Chavez CA’s runner-up 1:45.98 effort..

Men’s 800 Medley Relay
–Blazing anchor had Crenshaw win a terribly exciting finish with a 1:33.53, with Bishop O’Dowd next
at 1:33.68 and St. Bernard close behind at 1:33.69 (three within a meter and a half at the finish). The
winning clocking was just off the State Leading 1:33.46 by Grant (Sacramento).
Women’s 800 Medley Relay
–James Logan was tough here, with a nation-leading 1:44.51 winner with Thandi Stewart cranking a
54.9 anchor leg. New power Cesar Chavez (Sac Joaquin Section) impressed with the nation’s #3
clocking of the year in second at 1:45.98.
