Boys by SteveU - Danbury CT needed every bit of their distance talent and savvy to beat Loyola CA, US#1 17:33.73-17:34.57. The two squads came from harriers that were 5th and 8th, respectively, at NTN last fall, but Danbury was coming of their NSIC 4x1 Mile win in 17:28 that earned them the strong favorite’s role.
But with some of the other teams, like Valencia CA and Willow Glen CA, front-loading their relays, the eventual winners didn’t take the lead until midway through #3 man Willie Ahearn’s leg. But neither Ahearn nor anchor Parker Boudreau could pull away, and Loyola, with anchor James Kostelnik, chased them all the way to the tape. Still, the CT power was pleased as they stated that they came to win, not chase particular marks.
Girls by Dave Devine - Already hailed last fall as one of the greatest California cross country teams in history, the Saugus CA girls distance squad entered Friday night hoping to threaten the California state 4xMile record of 20:20.38 held by the 2005 Corona del Mar team. With inspired splits of 5:05.6 by Annie Randall, 5:03.8 by Kaylin Mahoney, 5:07.9 by Nina Moore, and a monster 4:53.9 PR by senior anchor Katie Dunn, they easily surpassed the targeted state mark and climbed all the way to #3 all-time in the US with their 20:10.76 clocking.
Womens 4x1 Mile
–The Saugus B team set up some history with four legs that averaged just over 5:20 on the way to an
amazing 21:21.98, the #3 time in the US for the year and a win over some good squads.
Super close to the female half of the meet, with the Saugus girls racing a Calfornia record and the #3
performance in US Prep History. Anne Randall led off at 5:05.6, with frosh Kaylin Mahoney soloing 5:03.8
as they separated from a strong pack. Nina Moore closed great on leg three with a 5:07.9, with Katie
Dunn out of her mind during a 4:53.5 anchor that brought the Saugus girls in at a State Record 20:10.76,
the #3 performance in US History.
Men’s 4x1 Mile Relay
–Danbury Connecticut steadily moved up off balanced 4:26.5-4:23.1 and 4:21.9 legs to come in ahead of
California’s best, Loyola, who had 4:25.0 (Elias Gedyon)-4:24.0-4:22.6 and 4:22.3 (James Kostelnik)
with the two recording the top and #3 time in the nation for the year.
