Manlius XC Coach Bill Aris has his troops eyeing #4, even while celebrating threepeat;
Better race strategies paying off for Sveinsson

It’s not that Bill Aris doesn’t savor the victories and the magnificent performances his girls (and boys) put together each year, but what he facilitated after Manlius XC (Fayetteville-Manlius) NY had won their third straight Nike Cross Nationals championship at Portland Meadows Saturday spoke volumes of the recipe for success at the New York school.

Manlius XC comes together after the race, with the Aris father-son coaching team looking on ...
As the last of his girls clipped her chip off her shoe, Coach Aris was barely able to contain his excitement – not just about what had just happened, but what was about to begin.  The girls knew it was coming, even if it wasn’t at the forefront of their minds at the moment.  “Let’s start getting ready for number four!” he declared.  The girls sprang to their feet and were seen shortly thereafter doing barefoot strides on the whoop-de-doo hills on the back part of the course.

Hours later, his hoarse voice barely audible, Coach Aris explained that it’s the team’s custom to do some barefoot strides after a race.  He subscribes to many of the training ideas of Lydiard and Cerutty, and strengthening the feet by running barefoot was a Lydiard principle.  But it’s also represents the continual moving forward of any Aris team.  “Win or lose, you’re going to go to work the next day,” he said.  “My seniors kind of agonize and groan that we start thinking about next year so quickly.”

Meghan Anklin, the #2 Manlius runner Saturday, would laugh later thinking about it.  “It was just like last year, as soon as the race was over, it’s ‘get ready for next year.’”  Last year, Anklin ran as the “8th runner” in the open race and had one of the highest non-Kenyan finishes.  She wistfully remembers wanting to savor her race a bit further.  “But we know our coaches know what’s best for us.”

Aris can’t help it; he’s always looking ahead.  Opponents have learned, especially the last few seasons, that they better look ahead, too – because few runners in any race are going to see any Fayetteville-Manlius runners behind them.  Last year, Aris talked about how he learned his team functioned best by going out aggressively and making it a strength race.  With many of the same girls back this year, the strategy was on display again.  Manlius runners, at one point after things started to break up in the first kilometer, had three in the top six.  As the early scores came in at the kilometer marks, they quickly had a lead of 50-plus, then more than 100 (raw scores).

... then launches into the post-meet striders.
The team race was over almost before it had begun.  The two-time defending champs would roll home with 66 points.  The Santa Clarita XC Club (Saugus) CA, reportedly “banged up” with a variety of ailments – Kaylin Mahoney didn’t run all week because of shin problems – rallied strongly in the late going to take second at 135.  A terrific battle for the next four spots saw Wilmington XC (Tatnall) DE claim third with 182, with 2004 champion Kinetic XC (Saratoga) NY fourth at 193, Adirondack XC (Queensbury) NY fifth at 203, Newton XC (Newton South) MA sixth at 204, and Fort Collins XC (Fort Collins) CO 7th at 218.

There was adversity as well

It wasn’t ALL smooth sailing for Manlius.  Molly Malone, the #3 last week at NXN NY, had come up ill Saturday morning.  “She wasn’t feeling well, but she didn’t tell everyone because she knew what she had to try and do,” said Courtney Chapman, who led the team in 7th.

In mid-race, Aris knew something was wrong.  “I started telling the girls ‘Molly’s in trouble, you have to dig down deep.’  Later, he said with a bit of amazement that Chapman had also withheld the fact that she was still under the weather.  Clearly, none of the Stotan girls wants to worry her teammates.  “I know we’re not the only team that had issues,” he cautioned.  “I think Saratoga and Burnt Hills did, too.  It’s part of the game.”

Chapman would still finish behind just six other runners, running 17:53, but probably would have at least been in the running for third on a good day.  Of course, not all of the Manlius girls struggled.  “Meghan had a tremendous race,” said Aris.

That would be the aforementioned Anklin, who is typically the 3rd-5th girl for the team.  She rose up to 19th overall, leading a tight trio of Stotans that basically sealed the deal.  She ran 18:14, followed by Hannah Luber (21st, 18:15) and Mackenzie Carter (24th, 18:18).  They scored 9-10-11, so when Malone finished in 63rd overall, her 33 points still closed the door with a convincing margin for Manlius.

Ironically, Anklin said she didn’t hear her coach saying Malone was in trouble during the race, she just “went out and gave it everything I had.  I wanted to leave it all out there.”  Given the fact that the senior ran in the open race last year, having dealt with 2-1/2 years of injury problems, it was especially gratifying for her to be in the F-M varsity mix all year and share in the glory at the end.  “It’s a lot different than running as the 8th-man,” she said.  “I was patient for three years and it paid off.  It was such a good experience.  I love our team and we ran for each other.  I’m really happy to end on a high note.”

In the end, Aris said he would categorize the whole year as one of overcoming adversity.  He noted that freshman Katie Sischo, who was entrenched in the top five, suffered a season-ending injury at the Section III meet, as well.  “As a whole today, we really didn’t run near our best,” he said.  “I was really kind of shocked we won like we did.  That’s not to put down anyone else.  I know everybody out there had challenges.  I am very proud, though, of the way our girls handled the challenges.”

Indeed, the other top teams did have challenges.  A lot of pundits though Santa Clarita XC (Saugus) CA was really going to struggle with Mahoney’s situation and other injuries and illnesses.  But the team was also extremely motivated to prove last year was no fluke.  Mahoney ran a smart race and gutted out an 11th-place finish (18:05) to start things off, then was followed 43 seconds later by a good pack with Amber Murakami (56th, 18:48), Stephanie Bulder (61st, 18:50), Brianna Jauregui (65th, 18:52), and Anne Randall (66th, 18:52).  That was good for 5-28-31-35-36, scoring-wise, 47 points ahead of third.

“We wanted to work together,” said Murakami.  “We wanted to get out well, and settle.  We ran as tough as we possibly could.”

Jauregui was also struggling with ailments; she’s typically a strong #2.  Murakami noted that the 3-6 runners normally run as a pack.  But Jauregui was able to be part of that pack, helping her hold it together for a strong team finish.

“We had four finish together, but they were a little bit back,” said Coach Rene Paragas.  “In terms of  an overall team effort, I think we've made some progress.  Everybody had a solid race, nobody was way back there.  Mentally, I think we were better than we ever have been here.”

The adversity 3rd-place Wilmington had to overcome was more mental.  They had proven themselves to be a regional power, but in their two national meet appearances they were 12th and 20th.  But veteran #1 Juliet Bottorff has never had the support like she’s had this year, with junior Kaitlin Buenaga and freshman Haley Pierce rising up to join her.  They finished 29th (18:29), 38th (18:37), and 53rd (18:47), respectively, Saturday, scoring 14-20-26.  At that point, they were still in 2nd and were able to hold off the other charging New York and Northeast teams with their final two finishers.

Sarah Andrews shadowed by Chelsey Sveinnson
While Coach Pat Castagno admitted afterward he felt the team really had what it took to challenge for the win, everyone was more than ecstatic with the 3rd-place finish.  Finally, Tatnall could truly say it was a national elite team – and from a tiny school in a tiny state, at that.

“This is so satisfying,” gushed Bottorff afterward.  “This is such a great way to go out.  When they told us we were one of the top three teams and we had to head over to the podium, we just jumped up in the air!”

New strategy the key for Sveinsson

Another Coach Bill Aris maxim is to tear up his “playbook” and start each season fresh, even if he has virtually the same team coming back.

Well, the first champion of the new era at NXN – with individuals added – basically did the same thing before the start of the season, at least in one key respect.

Last year, talented Greenhills TX freshman Chelsey Sveinsson seemed to know one way to run – all out from the gun.  The strategy was especially apparent in her national-level track performances, as she blasted away from the gun when she won the Nike Indoor freshman mile – with a time (4:49.37) faster than the seeded section.  The strategy didn’t serve her as well in some other races, like the Penn Relays mile, where she was passed and beaten (despite a PR 4:43).  In cross-country the previous fall, she had the same type of strategy, though tempered a bit for the distance.

“This year, we’ve really paid attention to race strategy,” she said after her convincing course record 17:27.  “I play toward my strengths.”

Obviously, one of Sveinnson’s strengths is her 800/mile speed.  Only Stephanie Morgan in the field had times at those events to compare to the soph’s 2:08/4:43 PRs.  So the Texan’s winning formula in a competitive race has been to sit with the lead until the last 800-1200 and launch a hard drive to the finish.

The formula worked well at the NXN South meet, where Sveinsson let The Woodlands XC (The Woodlands) TX junior Sarah Andrews set the pace until about a kilometer to go, then drove past for the fast victory.

Andrews, of course, was in Saturday’s race and, sure enough, heading down the long front stretch toward the 3K mark, there was Andrews in the lead.  However, that hadn’t been an immediate development.  The field was obviously much deeper and Andrews had not gotten off well in the first few hundred meters.  But she made her way up to the front and neatly took over.

 Lizzie Predmore and Danielle Winslow
Sveinsson, meanwhile, had been part of a lead pack running off of Danielle Winslow (Adirondack XC/Queensbury NY) and Lizzie Predmore (Clifton Park XC/Shenendehowa NY).  She was in her comfort zone and now, with Andrews surging ahead, found an even more familiar situation.  Unlike NXN, Andrews had had to really work to even take the lead at all, much less maintain it.  Also playing into Sveinsson’s hands was the fact that some of the other favorites had either lost a shoe (Amanda Winslow), having off days (Morgan), or having expended a lot of energy with their early pacesetting (Danielle Winslow).

So when it came time to make her move, Sveinsson had a clear path.  She took the lead and kept up the pressure to the end.  Her course record 17:27 was not only nine seconds clear of Andrews, but nine more seconds ahead of third-place.  It was a pretty dominant finish.

“I couldn’t be any happier,” said Sveinsson.  “I really wanted to win.  I wanted to my race and leave it on the course.

“I knew Sarah had to be close and would get up to the front,” she added.  “I just had to wait for the right time to take charge of the pace.”

For those wondering what Sveinnson will have left when she gets to San Diego next weekend, the Texas phenom indicated she did NOT leave it all on the course at Foot Locker South.  Watch out.

Andrews knew she had run a good race, but was still somewhat frustrated.  “I didn’t get a good start; I got myself boxed in and way to the outside.  I didn’t get to the front until halfway.  Surging in the middle of the race, I didn’t have much left at the end.  (Sveinsson) had a lot.”

Maybe the best finish of all went to Eleanor Fulton, the Highland Ranch CO runner who was “just” 7th at NXN SW and 5th in her 5A state meet.  “I don’t think I ran to my potential the whole season,” she said.  Saturday, she definitely closed in on that potential, passing several runners in the last kilo to take 3rd in 17:46 ahead of Danielle Winslow 17:49 and Lindsay Flanagan (Roselle XC/Lake Park IL) 17:51.

Winslow had gone out hard with Regan Tindell (Belton XC), who was trying to set the tone for Texas from the start.  Tindell would fade to 12th (although a very happy 12th), while Winslow, the NXN New York champ, held on well, topping in-state rivals Chapman and Sam Roecker (Burnt Hills XC) for the second straight week.

"I wanted to get a good start, but I got sort of boxed in right at the beginning,” said Winslow.  “It got me a little scared, so I went out really fast.  I felt pretty good, but I got really tired towards the end, probably because I went out so fast.”

For Flanagan, meanwhile, it wound up working that she got out somewhat slowly.  “It gave me more energy at the end.”  She hadn’t been pleased with her 5th at NXN Midwest, where she had a nagging “leg/hip thing going on” or even with her 7th at FL Midwest.  Saturday, however, saw the Flanagan that completely ruled Illinois this year.  “I’m definitely very happy with this,” she added.

Joining Sveinsson and Flanagan in San Diego will be West Des Moines XC (Dowling Catholic) IA junior Ashlie Decker, who was 8th.
