North Spokane XC 'brings one home for the Northwest'
Reed Connor TX continues torrid second half to the season with individual win

Boys Race Story by Dave Devine, senior editor DyeStat | ESPN RISE

When the Nike cross country meet was first conceived, part of the impetus for the creation of a national team competition was to end speculation about which storied programs around the country were actually the best.  Indeed, at that very first NTN in 2004, York High of Illinois, competing as Kroy XC, took the inaugural title and confirmed on the Portland Meadows course what had been expressed for years in hypothetical polls: York was one of the greatest boys programs in the United States.

Four years later, here was that same school, now competing as Elmhurst XC, standing in the post-race paddock of yet another national championship meet, arms wrapped around one another, heads bowed, waiting along with a second team to hear the outcome of the final two places in the scoring.

Who would be runners-up?  Who would be champions?

Four feet away and equally expectant stood an exhausted squad from another storied cross country Mecca.  While Elmhurst IL may have earned the title “Cross Country Town USA,” Spokane, Washington, has long been considered an American Rift Valley among prep distance fans.  North Spokane XC, ranked US#1 throughout the regular season as North Central WA, is the latest team to emerge from this traditional hotbed of high school talent, following in the footsteps of Mead and Ferris, among others.  After three months atop the rankings, here they were—stunned after a rough race to still be lingering in the paddock while The Woodlands XC of Texas was announced as the fourth place team, and Naperville XC (Naperville North IL) stepped forward to claim third.

The Dukes of Elmhurst and the denizens of Spokane, awaiting word of a national championship.

Clubs from Spokane had fared well at past NTN’s, with top-4 showings in every year save 2007, but a Spokane squad had never walked home with the trophy.  No team from west of the Mississippi ever had; the Northeast and Illinois had claimed all previous crowns.  And with key contributor Jeff Howard laid low with flu the day before the meet, it appeared unlikely North Spokane XC—despite a #1 ranking—had done enough to reverse that trend.

Awards announcer Toni Reavis paused to gather the appropriate suspense.

Elmhurst XC hugged tighter.  North Spokane XC clustered close and held their breath.

“In second place…” Reavis began, and then stopped.  “Is this right?  Are we—”

He appeared to doubt the information on the page front of him.  After being assured the results were official, he continued.

“In second place, Elmurst XC.”

The roar from the partisan Spokane loyalists was deafening.

“When they announced York was second,” North Spokane #2 man Leon Dean said later, “everybody just cheered and started crying.  I shed a couple of tears, but a few of the guys were crying pretty good.”

Coach Jon Knight, who guided the North Central team during the regular season, then stepped aside per Washington state association rules for the post-season run, was among them.

“I was just bawling,” he said. “The kids were all bawling…it’s just so emotional.”

North Spokane thought all was lost

Part of the emotion—and source of Reavis’ apparent podium confusion—came from a belief that everything had fallen apart for North Spokane in the latter stages of the race.  With chip timing and scoring mats at each kilometer offering live mid-race updates, the North Spokane squad had appeared strong in the early going, but seemed to tumble from the top five at the 4-kilometer update beamed onto the massive trackside video screen.  Elmhurst, by contrast, surged ahead and appeared firmly in control entering the last kilo, their second national title well in hand. The scores that were being broadcast, however, were raw scores which didn’t account for unattached individuals who are eventually removed from the results to determine the final team outcome.

“I was over there kicking myself,” Knight said later, “because we thought we were out of it. I wondered, did I overtrain them?  Why didn’t I get them flu shots?  All these things…and then somebody came over and said they thought maybe we placed.”

Elmhurst, though not assuming a victory, emerged from the finish chute feeling they’d done enough to win.  They exchanged muted, but enthusiastic, congratulations after the race.

“Our plan,” said Elmhurst #2 man Steve Sulkin (15:36 13th) “was to be in the mix at about 3 or 4k and then move up.”  Although not entirely pleased with his own race, Sulkin noted, “If we come out on top it’s all good.”

York had previously lost the Illinois state meet by a single point to rival Naperville North, and with those same two teams showing 1 and 2 at the fourth kilometer of the national competition, Sulkin (left, photo by John Nepolitan) was salivating at the possibility that his squad had lost the state meet, only to turn around and win the national title.

“As soon as the state meet was over, we were saying, ‘They can have state, we’ll take NXN.”

They very nearly did.

Naperville XC (Naperville North) was 3rd with 195 points, and Elmhurst was 2nd with 151.  But 17 points ahead, on the strength of a 10th place overall finish from Andrew Kimpel (15:32), and a 2-3-4 lineup of Dean (16:02), Howard (16:02) and Ben Johnston (16:06) that scored 23-24-27, North Spokane pulled off the victory.  One of the keys might have been fifth man Alex Avila, who charged home like gangbusters in the final kilometer and closed the door on the team trophy.

A coaching connection to Spokane's storied past

Another key, which wasn’t readily apparent on the course, might have been the steady, experienced coaching hand to whom Knight passed his young charges when he stepped aside after their Washington state meet.  Tracy Walters, a Spokane legend who coached Gerry Lindgren when Lindgren was a high schooler at Rogers, took over the helm.  He's been helping out at North Central since his son, Kelly, is an assistant to Knight during the cross country season and head track coach in the spring.

“I love the guy,” Knight said of Walters, who is now nearly 80. “He’s like my own father.  He’s the one who coached them the last three weeks.”

Kimpel, still in a daze ten minutes after the win was announced, said Walters got them ready and kept them loose. “He was great.  He gave us good workouts, but made it fun.”

Walters (right, photo by runnerspace.com) had the team prepared despite the fact that everyone knew Howard, who'd won the NXN Northwest regional when Kimpel was ailing, was now less than a hundred percent himself.

“Jeff could barely finish the course jog-through yesterday,” Dean said. “We were just running for each other out there today. I saw Jeff fading back a bit, and I knew it wasn’t good for us, so I just tried to pick it up a little bit and fill in that void for our team.”

A measure of inspiration may have also come from Knight’s entreaty to his team that they enter the race with what he refers to as 3 am courage.

3 am courage

Knight, who teaches history at North Central, suggested to his squad earlier this year that anyone can be ready for a battle “on a nice sunny day.  But it’s a lot harder to be courageous when you’re attacked at 3 o’clock in the morning.”

Were they ready, he asked, for that unexpected attack?  For that lost shoe, midrace?  That mud when they were counting on dry conditions?  That fallen teammate?  That flu on the eve of a national championship?

Would they have the courage to run onward then?

On Saturday, they clearly did.

“This dream started last year when we got sixth [at NTN].” Knight said. “Spokane has such a storied history, and for us to go back and say we’re one of the greatest teams in the history of the city… it’s such a gift to our school and our community.”

Hoisting the massive winged Nike trophy over his head, Kimpel looked out at the assembled crowd pressing against the awards podium and smiled.

“It’s good to bring one home to the Northwest,” he said.

For a city with no shortage of nationally-ranked teams through the years, but no Nike National team titles to match that history, it certainly was.

Connor turns a corner midseason, kicks to victory at the end

The Woodlands TX is another storied national program which has frequented the Portland Meadows, but never won the coveted trophy.  While the team was again unable to secure the title this year, finishing fourth for the second straight year, they nonetheless came away with a national champion.

Senior Reed Connor (left, photo by Robert Rosenberg), battling a stellar field which swelled in talent due to the addition of individual qualifiers this year, pulled away from a pack of four in the final 300 meters to seize the 15:14 victory.  It was no easy task, as the top two finishers from the Heartland regional, Jakub Zivec MN and Joash Osoro ND, along with Northeast regional champ Joe Rosa NJ, stuck around until the bitter end.

“I haven’t been in a close race like that in a while,” Connor said afterwards. “This is my last [cross country] race in high school.  I’m not going to Foot Locker next week and I was like, ‘This is it.  This is your last four years coming down to this last 1k.’”

Connor, Osoro and Zivec exchanged the lead through splits of 4:42 and 9:38, each hovering no more than an armslength from the others at any point.  Just behind, Rosa and fellow sophomore Craig Lutz of Texas were battling to stay in contention as the field powered into the third mile.

Rosa found the pace daunting but necessary. “Those guys went out a lot faster than I expected to go out, so I had to go harder than I would have liked.  But that was the race I needed to run.”

Osoro was hoping to hang around until the end and kick home for the title.

"My strategy was to stay with the leaders,” he said. “The other guys had a pretty good kick. I wanted to win real bad, and I was going pretty hard."

Zivec, an exchange student from the Czech Republic who will return to his homeland in January, tried to make the most of his remaining time in the US by pushing for the lead off the final set of haybales.  Osoro and Connor covered the move, then Rosa closed ground to make it a four-man race as the quartet swept through the ultimate turn and onto the homestretch.

Connor, a self-proclaimed ‘slow guy,’ unleashed a kick that no one could answer.

“I run 54 for the quarter,” Connor said, supplying evidence of his questionable speed. “I run 1:57 for the 800…what pulled me through in the kick was that last year at the Texas state meet I outkicked [1:49 800 talent] Blake Shaw in the 1600.  I just went for it today.  I didn’t know exactly where the finish was, but I knew I had to go.”

He was also motivated by the team battle in which his Woodlands XC squad was very much involved.

“I came into this race, and my goal was to get one point for the team.”

That he did, streaming across the line in a course record 15:13.6 to hold off Zivec’s 15:18.1.  Osoro was hot on Zivec’s heels at 15:18.7, and then went head over heels when he caught the toe of his spike on the finishline timing mat.  Rosa hurdled the fallen North Dakotan for a close 15:19 fourth place effort (right, photo by John Nepolitan).

"I like that the guys were tough," Osoro said afterwards.

Rosa was just appreciative to be in a race with so much top-shelf talent. “I’ve been waiting to race some of these national caliber runners all year,” he said. “To be in a race with so many guys who could have all won it…it’s just great to be here.”

Connor also appreciated the fast company up front, but was most pleased to see fellow Texan Lutz (15:25 5th) in the lead group for most of the race.

“One kid who was up there that helped me was Craig Lutz,” Connor said. “He’s from Texas and we’ve had some great races.  I beat him last week by 20-some seconds, so I thought if he was here, I could be further up too.”

It was an early-season loss to Lutz at the Nike South Invite that spurred Connor to re-evaluate his approach to racing and turn his season around.

“I told myself that I had to put my mental game together if I want to race with these kids.  And I did that.”

What followed for Connor was six straight weeks of personal records, a Texas 5A state title, an NXN South regional win, and the first ever Nike Cross National individual championship.

“I joined cross country in ninth grade for the free t-shirts,” Connor joked during his awards stand interview.

Four years later, he’s heading home with a lot more than that.
