1. Albuquerque Academy, NM


The Red Army continued its dominance over the best that the “Duke City” has to offer. At this year’s Albuquerque City Championships, Academy unleashed a record setting 55 point victory over Sandia (now back at full strength) and the rest of the field. It was their 9th consecutive city title. Once again the Chargers were led by their front running duo of Ben Johnson and Dustin Martin who finished 2nd and 3rd behind Footlocker favorite Matt Tebo. Academy will put their SW#1 ranking on the line Friday at Los Alamos.

2. Campbell County, Gillette, WY

Campbell County was perfect at the 4A North Regional this Friday. The serious competition for the Camels resides in the Southern part of the state. Next week the boys from Gillette will travel back to Cheyenne to battle with their instate foe Cheyenne Central and the rest of the teams in the 4A division.

3. Los Alamos, NM

No Meet this week

Los Alamos skipped the Capital City Invitational, hosted by Santa Fe High School. In the past this was a highly competitive meet. But this year the meet only had 5 teams due to the fact that the Rio Rancho Invitational was moved to this weekend. Rio Rancho is the site of the New Mexico state championships this year. The Hilltoppers will be rested and ready to prove their ranking against SW#1 Albuquerque Academy and Gallup who was ranked earlier this season.

4. Davis, UT

Davis raced to a tie with Weber at the Region I Championships. Davis defeated Weber with the score of their #6. Davis is still without their regular #2 man Spencer Anderson who has been cross training for the last 10 days. The coaching staff believes that he will be available for state but don’t know how well he will be able to run.

5. Wheat Ridge, CO

Wheat Ridge utilized a 31 second pack time to defeat league rival Dakota Ridge by 4. Both teams wear at full strength and look ready to battle CO#1 Fort Collins for the 5A state championship on October 28th. Before then the boys from Wheat Ridge will travel to Hinkley High School to compete in the 5A Region #3 Meet.

6. Grand Junction, CO

No major meet this week.

Coaches O’Brian and Keithley have been concentrating their efforts on some specific meets this season. They have limited the number of races for their #1, Richard Medina, who is focusing on the state championships and Footlocker. Last week when Grand Junction finished 2nd at Centerra they were without the services of the regular #3, Raffi Cote, who competes for both the cross country and soccer teams. The coaching staff expects to be a full strength for their Regional and for State.

7. Dakota Ridge, CO

Dakota Ridge finished 4 points behind Wheat Ridge at their League meet. They were led by Evan Appel and Sean McNeil who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Appel was only 3 seconds behind Steve Weeks who is one of the favorites for the individual title at state.

8. Rio Rico, AZ

No Meet This Week

The boys from Rio Rico did not compete in their Wednesday meet at Catalina High School. Instead they were able to devote a complete week to training. They are healthy are ready for the stiff competition that awaits them at Mt. SAC. They will run a small home meet on Wednesday before they make the trip to Walnut, CA.

Mountain Crest, UT

After a couple of weeks out of the spotlight; Mountain crest emerges with a big performance at the Region V Championships. The Region 5 meet was held on the same course as the Region 1 championship which includes SW#4 Davis. In a comparison of the Mt. Crest Times to those of Davis; Mt. Crest wins a duel 26-29 with Davis running without their usual #2.

Weber, UT

After 5 runners the battle between Weber and Davis was a draw. Davis’s #6 was 15 seconds faster than Chris Williams of Weber. Weber is one of a half a dozen teams that are in contention for the 5A state championship this Wednesday.

Timpview, UT

Timpview has been quietly improving and look to challenge for the 5A state championship next Wednesday. Early in the season, Timpview finished 5th at BYU. They finished behind, Mt. View (then at full strength), Davis, Mountain Crest and Cedar. Since that meet Josh Taylor and Crys Gardner have made marked improvements.

With the return of Todd Nickerson, the Sandia Matadors are back in the hunt for the 5A state championship. Sandia was a distant 2nd to Academy but so far this year that is almost as good as winning as no one has come close to the Chargers. Nickerson was the Matadors #1 at UNM.

2. Eldorado, NM

Eldorado won their 2nd consecutive Albuquerque City Championship on Saturday. The Golden Eagles were led by Rachel Velarde who has been the most consistent runner for Coach James Butler. Rachel finished 21 seconds behind Elba Holguin of Valley. Eldorado’s 47 second pack time was impressive but the girls had hoped for faster times on the Academy course. A windy morning dashed those hopes.

The Park City Girls won the 3A Region X Championship on Thursday. Park City did a good job of packing after three girls from Judge Memorial crossed the finish line in front of Rosie Brennan. Park City was back at full strength and ran all 7 of their runners in front of Judge Memorial’s #4.

4. Cherry Creek, CO

Cheery Creek had an easy go of it at the Centennial League Meet on Thursday. Lisa Johnstone led the way winning in 18:26 and finishing in front the “Fairview Three.” Cherry Creek will run in the Region #2 meet before attempting to upset Ft. Collins at state.

5. Campbell County, Gillette, WY

Campbell County dominated the Wyoming North Regional on Friday. The Camels were led by Trisha Evenson who won in 19:41. Campbell County main competition will come from the southern part of the state. In the southern regional Cheyenne Central defeated Rock Springs and are looking to upset the girls from Gillette.

The Davis girls ran their best pack time of the season on Tuesday in their victory in the Region 1 championships. In route to their solid 1:47 pack time, frontrunner Candace Eddy ran 5 seconds off of the course record at Layton City Park. Head Coach Corbin Tally believes that his girls are still improving and will run even faster at state. They will have to put up some fast times to compare with Park City, who many see as the best team in the state.

Mountain Crest easily defeated the pack at the Region V Championships. They put all of their scoring 5 in the top 10 and finished with an impressive 1:09 pack time. Mt. Crest will battle Davis in what looks like a two horse race for the 5A state championships.
