Big surprises by Wheat Ridge boys and Cherry Creek girls

by Aron Taylor

In a showdown of Southwest NTN ranked teams there were a few surprises at the annual Panther Invitational. Namely unranked, and unknown Wheat Ridge High out of Colorado Springs upsetting SW#2 Cherry Creek, SW#6 Dakota Ridge, SW#10 Liberty, and a slew of other top teams in impressive fashion. In 2005 Wheat Ridge placed 18th at the Colorado 5A State Championships, no one really pictured them as contendars for 2006. What is clear now is that the SW is wide open and perhaps Wheat Ridge will show even more in meets to come just how much of a surprise they are this year.

On the girls side, SW#10 Cherry Creek upset SW#7 Rocky Mountain and SW#3 Dakota Ridge. From 2005 State results these three teams are used to finishing consecutively but Cherry Creek posted a superior performance on the site for the 2006 State Championships, placing (5) runners in the top 16. The individual award went to Rocky Mountain's Ellie Rastall who paced the course in 18:30, slightly faster than her 2005 State runner-up performance.
