Friday’s Liberty Bell Invitational hosted 88 teams in 14 races, including a host of NTN Southwest regionally ranked teams, and the top seeds were victorious.

  • SW#1 Albuquerque Academy NM boys 93 were comfortable winners over Campbell County WY 121 points, SW#6 Cheyenne Central WY 142 and SW#3 Fort Collins CO 143 points.
  • SW#2 Fort Collins CO girls 52 trounced Cherry Creek CO 143 and SW#3 Campbell County WY 142.
  • Fastest individuals of the day were Denver North soph Joe Manilafusa 15:12.7 and Sarah Cocco (Fairview) 18:11.3.

Course and conditions - Elevation 5280’. 60% pavement and 40% dirt canal. Rainy weather was threatening at the start, but bypassed the meet. Partly cloudy, upper 60s, low 70s.

Division 1 Boys - This race was much anticipated with three of the top six regionally ranked teams. SW#1 Albuquerque Academy won with 93 points, followed by Campbell County WY (121), SW#6 Cheyenne Central WY (142), SW#3 Fort Collins CO (143) and Gallup NM (179). Individual winner was Anquel Tolev (Thornton) 15:30.9, edging Academy aces Ben Johnson 15:33.0 and Dustin Martin 15:36.9.

Division 1 Girls - The last race of the day had even more Southwest ranked teams, four of the top six. SW#2 Fort Collins CO 52 points trounced Cherry Creek CO (143), SW#3 Campbell County (146), Fairview CO (162) and Rocky Mountain CO 183. SW#4 Albuquerque Academy had a disappointing day as they finished 12th . Emerging Fairview star Sarah Cocco won the race in 18:11.3, the fastest time of the day. Three other girls provided a tough challenge -- Sarah Ellie Rastall (Rocky Mountain) 18:13.2, Alexis Skarda (Fairview) 18:13.2, and Lisa Johnstone (Cherry Creek) 18:22.0.

Division 4 Boys - Colorado Springs Christian School finished first followed by University, Peyton, Rocky Ford and LaJunta. Colorado Springs Christian School had their top five finished the race in the top 16. Victor Montoya (Rocky Ford) posttest the fastest time of the race with a 16:11.1 beating Noah Hoffman (Aspen) who finished with a 16:28.6.

Division 4 girls - was won by Roosevelt with 55 points, then was Basalt, Platte Canyon, Holy Family, and University. The winner of this girl’s race was Kristin McGlynn who ran virtually unchallenged the whole way as she finished almost a minute faster than the second place girl.

Division 3 Boys - Third race of the day was an exciting team race as Laramie (WY) beat Falcon (Co) by one point as Falcon 5th place runner was passed at the finished line. These two teams were followed by Battle Mountain, Denver North and Niwot. The winner of the boy’s race who was also the overall winner was Joe Manilafusa (Denver North) with a 15:12.7. Joe Manilafusa and his brother Erik Ndikumana who finished third have had to face a lot of obstacles in their lives. The boys were originally from Burundi until six years ago when their father was assassinated their mother then took the boys to Tanzania and finally to the United States.

Girls Division 3 - was won by Mullen CO with 79 points followed by Glenwood Springs, Evergreen, D’Evelyn and Woodland Park. Jen Webers (Conifer) won in 18:34.8 beating Kelly King (Silver Creek) 18:44.7.

Division 2 Boys - was won by SW#10 ranked team Dakota Ridge CO which had 79 points, Rampart CO was second with 85 points and SW#8 Wheatridge finished third with 94 points. Rounding out the top five was Grand Junction in fourth and Loveland finishing fifth. Richard Medina (Grand Junction) won the race and had the second-best boy’s time of the day winning the race with a 15:19.4. He beat Evan Appel (Dakota Ridge) 15:36.4.

Division 2 Girls - saw a close race won by Kelly Waters (Monarch) 18:23.6 beating Leigh Ann Ganzar (Littleton) 18:25.5. The team race was won by Dakota Ridge with 62 points followed by Littleton (70), Greeley West (121), Sand Creek (123) and in fifth Mountain Vista with 174 points.
