Summaries from Heartland Region Editor Tony Bozarth

Boys AA - Rob Finnerty of Burnsville finished an undefeated season, and fulfilled the expectations placed on him after a second place finish as a freshman four years ago.  Finnerty then suffered injuries, which saw him not qualify as a soph, and finish fourth last year.  This year, however, Finnerty simply left the field behind from the start to win in 15:28 over the 5k course.  Jordan Carlson of Rosemount was second at 15:37.  Peter Gagnon (Washburn, Minneapolis) was third at 15:44, with Mahad Hassan (Willmar 15:51) edging Robel Kebede (Minneapolis South 15:54) for fourth.

HL # 2 Wayzata took what many saw to be a tight team race and turned it into a run-away.  Wayzata scored 62 points, and their 16:22 team average was more than ten seconds ahead of anyone else in the field.  HL # 4 Rosemount was second with 110 points, with HL # 10 Brainerd (147), Stillwater (161) and Eastview (174) finishing out the top five teams.

Girls AA -  Youth was the name of the game in the girls’ 2A race, as underclassmen took the top four spots.  Laura Hughes of Mankato West ran off to the individual title, running a quick 14:28 for 4k.  Cassy Opitz (Eden Prairie) was second at 14:45, edging Emma Bates (Elk River 14:47).  Katie Moraczewski (White Bear Lake) was fourth in 14:53, edging Danielle Berndt (Kennedy, Bloomington, 14:54) and Jenny Rodgers (Apple Valley 14:55).

Traditional coaching wisdom says that experience at the state meet is needed to win the state meet.  Burnsville's ladies turned traditional coaching wisdom on it's ear at the Minnesota state meet.  Burnsville turned their first state meet appearance in 27 years into a great one, putting all their first five runners into the top twenty-five scorers and winning with 90 points.  HL #6 Eden Prairie was second with 106 points, with Minnetonka (122) third, HL # 10 Prior Lake (134) fourth and Lakeville North (159) fifth.

Boys A - In a match-up of last year's 1-2 finishers, Donny Wasinger (Winona-Cotter) turned the tables on defending champ Kevin Lachowitzer (Perham).  Wasinger kicked strongly over the last 600 yards to win in 15:52, with Lachowitzer second at 15:58.  Andrew Hoffman (St. Anthony Village) was third at 16:20, edging Ryan Tholen (Tracy/Milroy/Balaton, 16:21) and Clayton Foster (Pequot Lakes 16:23).

Perham dominated the team race with 88 points, and repeated as state champions.  Adrian was second with 150 points.  Pequot Lakes was third with 161, edging Pine City (165) and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle (173).

Girls A - Linda Keller (Paynesville) ran off to the girl's 1A title, winning by a large margin in 14:30.  Naomi Landecker (Staple-Motley) was second at 14:43, with Marissa Janning (Watertown-Mayer) third at 14:48.  Maddie McClellan of Perham was fourth at 14:58, with Lauren Rice (Holy Family Catholic) fifth at 14:59.

Youth was served as Adrian, running a team that included two seventh graders, one eight grader, and two freshman, won with 97 points and dominated the team race.  Holy Family Catholic was second with 143 points, edging out Perham (152) and Staples-Motley (154).  Mora was fifth with 169 points.
