Josh Heitkamp repeats in AA; 2007 girls individual winners Takahashi, Barrett
and Krein all bounce back from losses in 2008 to win again

Team Champs
  • Class AA - Yankton boys 58 over Brandon Valley 69; Yankton girls 61 over Sioux Falls Roosevelt 69
  • Class A - (four score) - Redfield/Doland boys 69 over Madison 77; Garrettson girls 60 over Canton 76;
  • Class B (three score) - Wessington Springs boys 12 over Lemmon 24; Lemmon girls 24 over Kadoka Area 32
Boys Highlights
  • Yankton wins 5th straight title in AA, battling Brandon Valley all the way before finally gaining 10 points on the 5th man for the final 58-69 margin
  • Sioux Falls Washington sr Josh Heitkamp wins 2nd straight in AA, running 15:46.42, less than 2 seconds off the state meet record for the Elks Golf Course.
  • Redfield/Doland, 3rd last year, wins its first title since 1982 in A.  They scored 69 and overcame Madison's (77) pack by going 6-12 in the scoring to start.
  • With dominant stars like Kiko Mendoza and Alex Muntefering finally graduating,  Marc Whirlwind Soldier (Todd County) moves up from 4th in A to win with 16:22.54, 25 seconds ahead of Cheyenne-Eagle Butte soph Dysan Lends His Horse
  • Led by the 2-3 punch of senior twins Mitch and Drew Kraft, Wessington Springs takes its 3rd straight title in Class B.  Mitch was runner-up for the 3rd straight year
  • Eureka/Bowdle's Jeffery Mettler wins his 2nd straight title in 'B,' improving to 16:41.05, a Class B record for the Elks Golf Course
Girls Highlights
  • After Sioux Falls Roosevelt broke their streak of 5 wins in a row last year, Yankton came back to pick up its 6th Class AA title in 7 years, scoring 61 to SFR's 69
  • The Class AA individual battle saw Sturgis jr Madeleine Takahashi (2007 champ) top Yankton sr Megan Hilson (2008 champ) by less than a second, 14:57.59 to 14:58.64.  SFR's Seanna Kautz, 2nd last year, was 3rd in 15:06.44
  • A year after watching Todd County 8th-grader Lottie Grimshaw take away her Class A crown, Britton-Hecla soph and 2007 champ Kelsey Barrett took it back with a 15:32.88 win, just 2 seconds up on Grimshaw.  Garrettson frosh Lindsey Bohl was 3rd
  • Bohl led Garrettson to the Class A team title, though, as their top three were too much for anyone to overcome.  With more depth than last year, they moved up from 9th and claimed their first title since 1999 and 2nd overall
  • In Class B, Lemmon won its first-ever title, moving up from 2nd last year and ending Kadoka Area's two-year run, with 24 to Kadoka's 32.
  • Eureka/Bowdle sr Hilary Krein - winner in 2007, then 3rd last year - came back to win as a senior in 15:40.85.  2008 champ Mindy Kraft of Wessington Springs was 4th.
