HL#1 Eden Prairie boys clip HL#2 Wayzata
But HL#3 Eden Prairie girls 3rd behind HL#8 Elk River, HL BT Prior Lake
Team Champs:- Class AA - Eden Prairie boys 47 over Wayzata 57; Elk River girls 120 over Prior Lake 123
- Class A - Plainview-Elgin-Millville boys 100 over Perham 102; Waseca girls 81 over Perham 92
- In the expected tight boys AA battle, HL#1 Eden Prairie used its strong front running at the top to edged HL#2 Wayzata, 47-57. that reversed the 2008 state meet finish between the teams and was the Eagles' first state title. Eden Prairie scored 1-3 to start and won the first four spots - and withstood Wayzata getting their top 7 in before their own 5th. HL bubble teams Burnsville (113), Stillwater (163) and White Bear Lake (208) were 3rd, 5th and 6th, with St. Thomas Acad. getting in for 4th at 139
- Eden Prairie jr Aaron Bartnik took the individual crown with a fastest-of-the-day 15:55.1, almost three seconds up on Woodbury sr Marty Joyce (15:58.0). Bartnik moved up all the way from 29th as a soph.
- The girls AA race saw a tremendous 3-way clash go to HL#8 Elk River (120) over HL bubble team Prior Lake (123) and HL#3 Eden Prairie (127). Elk River didn't have as tight a pack as Prior Lake, but had a 1-2 punch with Emma Bates (2nd) and Abbi Asengren (8th, scoring 5th) that was too much to overcome. Eden Prairie was close on their 1-2, and had the best 3rd runner of the meet, but lost a little much on the 4th and 5th runners to the other two teams
- Shakopee frosh Maria Hauger took a big early lead and held on to edge Bates, 14:40.8 to 14:41.7. Alexandria soph Jamie Piepenburg was 3rd at 14:45.6
A Highlights
- A very close 3-way fight for the boys A crown saw Plainview-Elgin-Millville nip Perham in each of the first four spots and hold on for 100-102 vicory. It was the school's first title as a combined program (Elgin-Millville won in '85 and '86) St Cloud Acad., which only lost significant ground on its #2, was 3rd with 110
- Worthington soph Mubarik Musa, who ran at Class AA Park Center as a frosh (8th at state) pulled away in the final mile to an 18-second boys Class A win in 16:01.8
- In a close battle with Perham, Waseca grabbed the girls A title with the strongest combined 3-4 girls. That gave them a 17-point advantage and helped them to an 81-point total, 11 ahead of Perham. Mt. Lake-Butterfield-Odin (3rd, 121) had a tight pack but not enough front running to overcome, while Adrian (4th, 154) had a great top three, but dropped off with the 4-5
- Perham sr Maddie McClellan picked up the individual title with a 14:55.2, seven seconds ahead of Chatfield frosh Kayla Woltz (15:02.3)
