NTN Midwest Top Ten Report

MW#2 Dexter MI boys reach new heights; MW#1 Westfield IN girls on a roll

Week ending Oct. 14, 2006

By Scott Bush, NTN Midwest Editor

Boys - Girls

Finally colder temperatures, snow and rain, and bad winds swept through the Midwest.  It felt like fall and cross country weather all week leading up to the big weekend meets throughout the region.

Boys

1. York, IL -

York has not had many challengers this season outside of the tough Palatine Invitational.  At their conference meet on Saturday York once again ripped through the competition, dominating the field as they ran 2-8 in the meet to win 20-65 over Downers Grove North.  DGN's Luke Ryan won the meet and is starting to look like the top five threat he was predicted by most to be at the beginning of the year, but after Ryan York simply desimated the field.  With an amazing 1-7 split of 48 seconds, the Dukes were led up top with Tom Achtien and Mike Fry both cracking the 15 minute barrier.  York's depth continues to shine week after week, as their four thru seven runners ran within ten seconds of one another.
2. Tom Achtien - 14:37
3. Mike Fry - 14:45
4. Nick Kuczwara - 15:04
5. Alan D'Ambrogio - 15:15
6. Kevin Spicer - 15:22
7. Kevin Talbot - 15:23
8. Mark Sulkin - 15:25
Meet Results: N.A.
Next Meet: Proviso West Regional, 10/21/06.

2. Dexter, MI -

No one, not even Dexter's coach, could have predicted a perfect score at this past weekend's Gabriel Richards Invitational.  The top three teams in Division I were in the field (Dexter is DII), including MW #5 Pinckney.  However, as the race progressed and the last few meters were run, Dexter did indeed perfect score 15-51 over Pinckney and the rest of the strong field.  Not only did they perfect score, but the next closest competitor in the field was seven seconds off of Dexter's number five man. This was perhaps one of the best run races of the entire year nationally.  It was obvious that the Dexter frontmen of Bobby Aprill and Dan Jackson held back, as their 1-5 split was a mere 16 seconds.  What an amazing performance!
1. Bobby Aprill - 15:52
2. Dan Jackson - 15:53
3. Jason Bishop - 15:58
4. Ben Steavenson - 16:01
5. Ryan Neely - 16:08

Next Meet: SEC Meet, 10/19/06.

3. Woodridge, OH -

After facing LaSalle and barely winning last weekend, Woodridge used this past weekend to prepare for the bigger meets ahead.  Woodridge won 19-47 over their nearest competition at the Portage Trail Conference.  Seniors Scott Hilditch and David Petrak easily went 1-2, while the team also placed their entire top seven in the top nine spots of this meet.
1. Scott Hilditch - 15:42
2. David Petrak - 16:08
4. Brian Himelright - 16:23
5. Joey McCoy - 16:27
7. Daniel Petrak - 16:44

Next Meet: District Championships, 10/21/06.

4. LaSalle, OH -

A win in their conference meet on Saturday was to be expected, as LaSalle needed a week to get some rest and just run to win.  Week after week this season, LaSalle has gone against the best and one would wonder if that would tired them out at all at some point.  Up to now it has not and with winning the Greater Catholic League Championships 24-52, LaSalle could afford some down time.  The team went 1-2-3, with Kyle Lang, Jake Nusekabel and Corey Spriggs leading the charge, while their 4-5 runners also placed in the top twelve.
1. Kyle Lang - 15:20
2. Jake Nusekabel - 15:29
3. Corey Spriggs - 15:33
8. Ricky Lupp - 16:03
11. Mitchell Huesman - 16:16
22. Sean Comer - 16:42
31. Jeff Ehler - 16:59
Meet Results: N.A.
Next Meet: District Championships, Voice of America Park, 10/21/06.

5. Pinckney, MI -

After losing fairly bad to MW #2 Dexter the week before at the Portage Invitational, many thought that Pinckney would bounce back and challenge Dexter just a bit more this past weekend at the Gabriel Richards Invitational.  Unfortunately for this squad, Dexter decided to run perhaps their best race of the season and won 15-51.  Pinckney was stated as looking "flat" by a couple of onlookers, and simply did not challenge from the start.  While Pinckney did take second and did beat many other top teams they will be facing at state, one wonders if this squad can bounce back from this tough loss.
6. David Emery - 16:15
7. Mike Katsefaras - 16:15
11. Brenden Marcum - 16:40
12. Brian Hankins - 16:41

Meet Results: http://www.rc.net/lansing/fgrhs/2006/boys1.txt
Next Meet: Do not compete this coming weekend.

6. St. John's Jesuit, OH -

While St. John's Jesuit looked to win their city championships this past Saturday, they also looked to make another statement before the state series began.  SJJ ran 1-2-3 yet again as they won 23-39 over second place squad St. Francis DeSales.  However, their 3-4 split was once again well over a minute and with the bigger meets approaching, SJJ needs to close that gap.
1. Joe Miller - 15:20
2. Matt Lemon - 15:21
3. Chris Lemon - 15:33
8. Chris Madaras - 16:47
9. Ben Schoonmaker - 16:59
11. Brett Wagner - 17:14

Next Meet: District Championships, Pearson Park, 10/21/06.

7. Bloomington North, IN -

Another week, another win for Bloomington North, as their road to state started and continued on after easily winning their sectional and regional.  On Saturday, BN won their regional over Bloomington South 36-94, placing four in the top ten and five in the top twelve.  Their split was a nice 36 seconds, as they easily roll into their semi-state next weekend, where they should easily advance to the state meet in two weeks.
4. Michael Hoffmann - 16:08
6. Tom Schoch - 16:27
8. Will Autio - 16:39
10. Ryan Jackson - 16:40
12. Andrew Buzzelli - 16:44
27. Wes Drake - 17:31
37. Trent Dowery - 17:47

Next Meet: Semi-State Meet, 10/21/06.

8. Palatine, IL -

Palatine has faced the top teams in Illinois week after week it seems all season long.  After beating IL #3 Schaumburg twice earlier this season by the slimest of margins, Palatine finally broke it open with their best race of the season, winning their conference championship 42-56 over Schaumburg.  Right from the gun Palatine moved into their positions, where they wanted to be the entire race, and just kept plugging away and had the race in the bag at the mile and a half mark.  Led by junior Mat Smoody and senior Sagar Patel, Palatine placed four in the top ten and had five all-conference runners.  This squad is known for running their best at the end of the season when it matters most, and this past weekend was a good start.
3. Mat Smoody - 15:30
4. Sagar Patel - 15:38
8. Matt Dettloff - 15:55
10. Kevin O'Brien - 15:58

28. Eddie Lopez - 16:29
54. Ulyses Reynoso - 17:16

Next Meet: Wheeling Regional, 10/21/06.

9. Warren Central, IN -

After dominating their competition the past two weeks and at sectionals earlier in the week, Warren Central again had a less than stellar race, barely beating Franklin Central 60-64 at Franklin Central Regional.  De'Sean Turner continued his dominance of the competition, as he easily won in 15:13, while Ondraius Richardson did his part as well in taking fourth.  The main issue WC had though was that their #3 man was 1:05 behind Turner.  This will hurt them in the next two weeks if Pack or other number 3/4 man Cody Smith doesn't get closer to Richardson.
1. De'Sean Turner - 15:13
4. Ondraius Richardson - 15:50
15. Caleb Pack - 16:18
19. Cody Smith - 16:25
21. Micah Aldrich - 16:32
30. Orion Wenrich - 16:51
37. Joel Mathews - 17:08

Next Meet: Semi-State Meet, 10/21/06.

10. Sandburg, IL -

A dominant performance by Sandburg at their conference meet is all that can be said, as Sandburg won 17-70, while putting all of their top seven in the top eleven spots.
1. Kevin Adamowski - 15:26
2. Tom Sideras - 15:31
3. Justin Smith - 15:35
5. Brad LaRocque - 15:40
6. Mike Marbach - 15:52

Next Meet: Bremen Regional, 10/21/06.

Girls

1. Westfield, IN -

Facing previously ranked Carmel, IN in both their sectional and regional this week could have tired out a lesser team, but Westfield was up for the challenge and came out on top both times.  Running without a couple of their top seven runners earlier in the week, Westfield barely beat Carmel.  However, running at regionals on Saturday with a full squad, Westfield dominated Carmel 31-50 to take home the regional crown.  Led by a dominating performance up front, Westfield looked like the unstopable force they have been all season, as they placed four in the top seven against some of the state's best top teams.
1. Kristina Krasich - 14:33
3. Maggie Bingham - 14:39
4. Kaitlyn Love - 14:45
7. Breanne Ehrman - 15:03
16. Dana Christie - 15:40

Next Meet: Semi-State Meet, 10/21/06.

2. Minster, OH -

Minster has been running great the past few weeks, racking up big wins both out of state and in state.  At the Coldwater Invitational on Saturday Minster ran a nearly perfect race, winning 20-57.  Placing their top five in the top seven and their top seven in the top eleven, Minster keeps on proving just how good they are.  Bernadette Burke ran a great race and kept the split close, with it being only 33 seconds this week.
1. Bernadette Burke - 19:18

4. Brigitte Sherman - 19:40

4. Waukesha West, WI -

After losing in a strange meet setup last week to WI ranked Middleton, Waukesha West felt they needed to prove their worth again and really took it to the teams at their invitational this past weekend.  Waukesha West went 1-2-3 and placed their entire top seven in the top 13 spots of the meet, winning 26-72 over Arrowhead.
1. Alyssa Beste - 14:54

7. Barrington, IL -

Despite placing three in the top eight at their always strong conference meet, Barrington nearly lost to IL ranked Fremd 63-65 on Saturday at the Mid-Suburban League Conference meet.  Samantha Learch led the way, running with the leaders for a part of the race and then fading just a bit, although she ran very strong the whole way.  What hurt Barrington was the gap between their third and fourth runner, which was just over 25 seconds.  With how deep their conference is, they could not afford that big of time split.
5. Samantha Learch - 18:46
7. Danielle Locascio - 19:01
8. Rebecca Tracy - 19:05
21. Kayla Bingham - 19:31

10. Okemos, MI -

After a high of really going after MW ranked Rockford, MI last weekend and running one of their best races to date, Okemos came back and simply did not produce at the level they needed to in order to maintain a Midwest ranking.  Although frontrunner Danielle Dakroub ran well and took third, Okemos still lost 80-108 to East Lansing.  What hurt this team was their split of over one and half minutes.
3. Danielle Dakroub - 19:32
14. Teresa Buiocchi - 20:13
22. Jessica King - 20:32
27. Chelsea Miller - 20:46
