NTN Midwest Report

MW #8 LaSalle (OH) beats SE #3 Trinity, Palatine (IL) boys upset MW #10 Sandburg, MW #2 Dexter (MI) looks phenominal, while girls MW #10 Rockford (MI) dominated in Michigan!

Week ending Sept. 17, 2006

By Scott Bush, NTN Midwest Editor

Mild and humid conditions cast over the Midwest this past weekend, as many top teams traveled to take on the best their respective states had to offer.  In Illinois the best of the best came together at the Peoria Notre Dame Invitational, where previously ranked Palatine (IL) beat MW #10 Sandburg (IL) and a host of other top Illinois schools in the boys race, while beating Schaumburg for the team title by one point.  On the girls side the very deep and talented Hinsdale Central (IL) beat MW #9 Naperville North, who finished up out of the top three.
Meanwhile in Michigan, the Spartan Invitational was taking place at Michigan State University.  MW #10 Rockford (MI) won the girls race over MW #5 Okemos (MI) and MW #7 Saline (MI), who beat them last week in a tie-breaker.  Rockford returned one of their top girls, who sat out last week, and regained amazing form in taking the team title easily.  On the boys side, MW #5 Pinckney dominated their race, scoring a mere 27 points.
  Other happenings around the Midwest:
- In Kentucky at the Trinity Invitational, MW #8 LaSalle (OH) won the boys race over MW #9 Carmel (IN) 49-64, while both squads decimated SE #3 Trinity (KY), who finished fourth with 150 points.
- Both girls MW #1 Westfield (IN) and boys MW #1 (York) took off this past weekend, getting in great training before some huge competition ahead.

Boys

1. York, IL -

Despite sending their JV squad down to the state meet course to run the Peoria Notre Dame Invitational, the varsity runners have yet to open up their invitational season.
Next Meet: Palatine Invitational, 9/23/06 - The varsity crew finally gets to open up their season.  This invitational is consistently the best meet of the regular season in Illinois and this year will be no exception.  Most of the top ranked teams will be there, as well as many top individuals.

2. Dexter, MI -

At the Nike Holly Invitational on Saturday, Dexter destroyed the competition in the Division II race, putting their top seven runners in the top 15 positions and ran a 1:29 split 1-5 with their top runners finally getting a chance to go all out.  Junior Bobby Aprill again led the team with a win over Addis Habtewold (Jr., St. Clair), winning in 15:51 to Habtewold's 15:56.  Senior sensation Dan Jackson continued to improve as he took third in the strong field.  Perhaps the best performance of the day came from Ryan Neely, who finished fourth and only five seconds back from Jackson.  Dexter's 5-7 packed up nicely to have a three second split.
1. Bobby Aprill - 15:51
3. Dan Jackson - 16:12
4. Ryan Neely - 16:17
8. Ben Steavenson - 16:47

Next Meet: They will take the weekend off to rest up for their big October match-ups ahead with MW #5 Pinckney.

3. Warren Central, IN -

Facing many state ranked teams, including a tough Northridge (IN) squad, Warren Central won the New Prairie Invitational with 147 points.  Second place was Northridge, who ran an exceptional race scoring 154 points.  It was mighy close going into the final 400m, but Warren Central pulled it out.  De'Sean Turner lost for the first time in what seems like ages, taking third.  The rest of the pack ran well, but not as special as their number three ranking would indicate.  They are vulnerable at the fifth position.  There was nearly a two minute gap between Turner and fifth man Caleb Pack.  They will be tested mightly this coming weekend at the Culver Invitational.
3. De'Sean Turner - 15:38
8. Ondraius Richardson - 16:14
23. Cody Smith - 16:44
42. Micah Aldrich - 17:09
72. Caleb Pack - 17:32
86. Joel Mathews - 17:39
92. Orion Wenrich - 17:44

Next Meet: Culver Invitational, 9/23/06 - Every year the Culver Invitational produces some of the finest results you will find anywhere in the Midwest.  This year's meet will not only include Warren Central but also MW #9 Carmel (IN) and a strong Neuqua Valley (IL).  This will be a great barometer to see how Indiana and Illinois match up.

4. Woodridge, OH -

Woodridge once again dominated another invitational, this time rocking the competition at the Boardman Spartan Invitational.  Scoring a mere 21 points and winning by 126 points, this was one of the easiest weekends Woodridge will have all season.  A nice 44 second split seperated their top five, led by frontrunner Scott Hilditch, who won the race in 16:07.
1. Scott Hilditch - 16:07
2. David Petrak - 16:22
4. Joey McCoy - 16:37
5. Brian Himelright - 16:37
9. Daniel Petrak - 16:51
28. Matthew Weiss - 17:29
35. Tony Marette - 17:42
Meet Results: http://baumspage.com/cc/spartan/2006/b2.htm
Next Meet: Information forth coming.

5. Pinckney, MI -

Heading into this past weekend's competition at Michigan State University, Pinckney knew they would have to be on top of their game if they hoped to pull out a victory.  Well, they were and they won big, defeating Novi for the team title 27-121.  Placing their entire top five in the top eight and having a 24 second split was big and showed just how strong this team could be down the road.  They will have their shots against MW #2 Dexter in the coming month.
1. Brenden Marcum - 16:11
5. David Emory - 16:29
6. Mike Katsefaras - 16:35
7. Jake Hohl - 16:35
8. Brian Hankins - 16:35
26. Matt Wines - 16:51
73. Eric Poyhonen - 17:32
Meet Results: http://www.doitsports.com/newresults3/client/44741_172612_2006.txt
Next Meet: Jackson Invitational, 9/23/06.

6. St. John's Jesuit, OH -

Once again the strong 1-3 combination of the Lemon brothers, Matt and Chris, and junior Joe Miller were the factor for St. John's Jesuit beating runner-up Hilliard Darby 69-74 to win the Galion Invitational.  This one was too close as SJJ showed their 4-5 weakness against semi-challenging competition.  Having a split of over 1:30 was critical and if this team hopes to beat MW #8 LaSalle next weekend they need that split to be smaller.
1. Matt Lemon - 15:20
2. Chris Lemon - 15:32
4. Joe Miller - 15:36
24. Brett Wagner - 16:48
31. Ben Schoonmaker - 16:54
39. Chris Madaras - 17:02
69. Max Layman - 17:29
Meet Results: http://www.baumspage.com/cc/galion/2006/hsb1.htm
Next Meet: All-Ohio Catholic Championships, 9/23/06 - SJJ will get a chance to take on heavy-hitter MW #8 LaSalle.  These two teams will be coming into this competition riding waves of momentum, so it will be interesting to see just how these two match-up.

7. Franklin Central, IN -

Winning your own invitational is always a great thing.  Franklin Central won their invitational on Saturday easily beating runner-up Fishers 54-115.  The frontrunning of Adam Green once again scored the team a very low number up top, with Scott Lasiter and Jordan Mitchell also placing in the top ten.  A decent split of 69 seconds seperated their top five.  Each week this team gets a little bit better.
1. Adam Green - 15:48
5. Scott Lasiter - 16:10
7. Jordan Mitchell - 16:15
14. Joe Talhelm - 16:28
27. Zach Jenkins - 16:57
53. Robert Shoemaker - 17:25
54. Tyler Ernstberger - 17:26
Meet Results: http://www.onlineraceresults.com/race/view_plain_text.php?race_id=3744
Next Meet: FW Strider Classic, 9/23/06 - While most of the top teams will be at the Culver Invitational, Franklin Central will be competiting at this invitational.

8. LaSalle, OH -

Despite losing an early season match-up, LaSalle was determined to go down to the Trinity Invitational this weekend in Kentucky and see just how good they really are.  Facing MW #9 Carmel (IN) and SE #3 Trinity was a big test for this squad and in the end they prevailed.  Winning the team title with 49 points and beating runner-up Carmel by 15, LaSalle jumped back into the Midwest results and showed that they still deserve a good ranking.  A magnificant 1-5 split of 46 seconds was the key to this squads success and will be for the rest of the season.  Their overall average time this weekend on a nice 5k spread is also a good indication of how good they are.  Next up is MW #6 St. John's Jesuit and their tough 1-3 group.
4. Kyle Lang - 15:58
6. Corey Spriggs - 16:08
8. Jake Nusekable - 16:13
12. Ricky Lupp - 16:27
19. Mitchell Huesman - 16:44
34. Mike Inderhees - 16:59
47. Sean Comer - 17:11
Meet Results: http://www.ktccca.org/2006xc/06xcresTrinityInvite.htm
Next Week: All-Ohio Catholic Championships, 9/23/06 - You can bet after losing to MW #4 Woodridge two weeks ago that LaSalle is on a mission to prove that they are far from finished in Ohio.  After defeating MW #9 Carmel (IN) this past weekend, LaSalle should have some confidence that they can finish the job heading into this weekends action versus MW #6 St. John's Jesuit (OH).

9. Carmel, IN -

The Trinity Invitational (KY) gave Carmel the test they needed before this coming weekend's Culver Invitational.  Despite a first place finish by lead man Jacob Rich, Carmel finished second, 15 points behind invitational winner MW #8 LaSalle (OH).  Despite the loss, Carmel ran well, placing their top five runners in the top twenty-two places and a 1:06 spread 1-5.  Chad Bowman looked somewhat like his old self again, as he ran as Carmel's number two.  In the coming weeks he should get back closer to Rich and when this happens Carmel will be a very tough team to beat.
1. Jacob Rich - 15:40
9. Chad Bowman - 16:18
11. Logan Rosenberg - 16:25
21. J.D. Smith - 16:45
22. Kevin Courtney - 16:46
32. Zach Morris - 16:57
65. Jeff Alexander - 17:28
Meet Results: http://www.ktccca.org/2006xc/06xcresTrinityInvite.htm
Next Week: Culver Invitational, 9/23/06 - Another chance to improve and another shot to take on some of the top talent in the Midwest.  Carmel has gone out and challenged the best in the Midwest so far this year and will get another shot to show their talent this weekend against MW #3 Warren Central (IN).

10. Sandburg, IL -

With heavy expectations heading into the Peoria Notre Dame Invitational, Sandburg needed to showcase their talents in order to climb the rankings.  Sandburg however simply did not have enough to beat Mid-Suburban League powers Palatine and Schaumburg, as Sandburg took third with 121 points, twenty points behind team champion Palatine.  The loss of number 2/3 man Brad LaRocque certainly did not help them.  While Sandburg is running nicely all the way from 1-7, they need a frontman to lead them if they hope to beat the top Illinois teams, including York, who they will face this coming weekend at the Palatine Invitational.
15. Tom Sideras - 15:15
17. Kevin Adamowski - 15:20
20. Justin Smith - 15:27
33. Chuck Archer - 15:41
43. Mike Marbach - 15:57
56. Mike Young - 16:04
57. Zach Dahleen - 16:04
Meet Results: http://www.dyestat.com/?pg=reg4il060916notredame
Next Week: Palatine, Invitational, 9/23/06 - After sitting out their #2 man this past weekend due to illness, Sandburg will be hoping that they are ready to make up for last weekend's disappointment, where they finished third.  They will get their shot to see how they stack up against MW #1 York (IL).  Many in Illinois at the beginning of the year thought they were as good as York, if not better, so this is their shot to lay it on the line.

Girls

1. Westfield, IN -

Did not compete this past weekend, as they rested up for an intense schedule ahead.
Next Week: Culver Invitational, 9/23/06 - Most of the top teams in Indiana will be traveling to the Culver Invite, so Westfield will have some great competition to go against, including the very powerful Hinsdale Central (IL) squad, who beat MW #9 Naperville North this past weekend.

2. Waukesha West, WI -

The past few seasons Waukesha West may have been the deepest team in the Midwest.  This year they are indeed the deepest team in the Midwest and their showing this past weekend at the Marquette Invitational proved so.  WW split up their team into two seperate teams and placed first and second with 37 points and 46 points, both easily beating their third place team who scored 66 points.  In fact West had their top ten runners in before any other teams number five runner.  West had the top four finishers in the race, once again showing that their 1-3 may be the best combination in the Midwest.  The 4k course really showed that this team is deep and fast.
1. Alyssa Beste - 14:58
2. Karlye Wolff - 15:08
3. Laura Koch - 15:20
4. Erica Claas - 15:55
8. Ashley Vonck - 16:09
9. Krista White - 16:13
11. Michelle Joubert - 16:17
Meet Results:
Results forthcoming.
Next Week: Kettle Moraine Relays, 9/23/06.

3. Minster, OH -

Placing their top five runners in the top ten positions, Misnter ran through the competition at the Easton Invitational.  A 59 second split was fantastic as they beat runner-up Fort Loramie 30-77.  Brigitte Sherman paced the team again, this time winning the individual title with a time of 19:21.  Meanwhile their 2-6 runners had a 13 second split and looked completely dominant on the tough 5k course.
1. Brigitte Sherman - 19:21
5. Katie Dahlinghaus - 20:09
6. Jenna Fausey - 20:11
8. Lei Bornhorst - 20:18
10. Lauren Fausey - 20:20

Meet Results: http://www.baumspage.com/cc/eaton/invitational/2006/ghs2.htm
Next Week: Van Wert Invitational, 9/23/06.

4. Bowling Green, OH -

Bowling Green continually beats all of their competition in Ohio.  It has been this way for a few years now and on Saturday at the Galion Invitational it was once again that way.  Beating the next closest team 40-89, BG showed their dominance with some up front power and some solid 4-5 running.  Christy Titus and Barbara Powers again led their team finishing 1-2, while Shannon Titus finished eighth for another top ten finish.  The strong pack running of Alyssa Glenn and Anne-Marie Simon has started to pay off and they ran some excellent times, both coming in well under twenty minute.
1. Christy Titus - 18:30
2. Barbara Powers - 18:54
8. Shannon Titus - 19:21
12. Alyssa Glenn - 19:42
17. Anne-Marie Simon - 19:48
45. Audrea Renny - 21:09
56. Taylor Worthington - 21:21
Meet Results: http://www.baumspage.com/cc/galion/2006/hsg1.htm
Next Week: Cardinal Striton Invitational, 9/23/06.

5. Okemos, MI -

High expectations were present on Saturday at the Spartan Invitational for Okemos, and an eighth place showing proved that maybe the hype surrounding this team was too much.  Even with some off races, their eighth place showing was a huge surprise.  Okemos doubled the Rockford score and then some, even though frontrunner Danielle Dakroub finished in the top ten.  Having a split of nearly two minutes especially did not help their chances.
9. Danielle Dakroub - 19:23
30. Teresa Buiocchi - 20:07
66. Laura Weiser - 20:54
70. Jessica King - 20:56
85. Ann Marie Lanzetta - 21:14
96. Allie Pugh - 21:26
163. Jenna Dakroub - 22:19

Next Week: Information forth coming.

6. Barrington, IL -

Did not compete this past weekend.
Next Week: Palatine Invitational, 9/23/06 - While the boys race is the highlight of the weekend in Illinois, the girls race will still be very exciting.  Barrington should roll to a win if all goes as planned.

7. Saline, MI -

After the high that last weekend's win over Rockford brought, you can bet Saline is at a low with their fifth place finish at the Spartan Invitational.  Alex Leptich and Kate Carter led the way for their team, as they scored 194 points, well behind team champion Rockford.  What hurt this team was their 1:21 1-5 split.
12. Alex Leptich - 19:35
17. Kate Carter - 19:37
35. Lindsey Cummings - 20:17
57. Lexie Mathis - 20:44
73. Melanie Conn - 20:56
83. Kari Frank - 21:13
180. Alice Bowe - 22:34
Meet Results: http://www.doitsports.com/newresults3/client/44741_131857_2006.txt
Next Week: Monroe Invitational/Jackson Invitational, 9/23/06 - Their schedule shows two meets, so you can venture to say that they are splitting up their squad.

8. St. Ursula, OH -

Placing all of their top seven runners in the top 17 was a great indication of just how dominant St. Ursula was this past weekend at the Bethel-Tate Invitational, where they beat the runner-up squad 35-61.  With their top four runners running within 16 seconds of each other and their 5-6 runners seemingly running together, St. Ursula packed it up nicely and had a chance to run well together before their challenging meet next weekend.
4. Shannon Balmat - 20:21
5. Teresa Thaler - 20:26
6. Cameron Kurz - 20:30
7. Christina Zaffiro - 20:37
13. Austin Perry - 21:17
15. Sarah Dalton - 21:29
17. Hannah Wolfer - 21:49
Meet Results: Results Pending.
Next Week: All-Ohio Catholic Championships, 9/23/06 - The always competitive weekend will showcase some of Ohio's best, which means St. Ursula will have to be hitting on all cylinders if they want to earn the win.

9. Naperville North, IL -

Running without their top runner, Maggie DeBerge, Naperville North lost at the Peoria Notre Dame Invitational taking fourth place with 183 points.  A week earlier they beat the PND Invitational champion Hinsdale Central by a mere point, but this week was not even close to the same result.  Even with the loss of DeBerge, Naperville still competed well but showed they have a lot of work to do if they hope to win the state title once again.
14. Michelle Stratton - 18:20
38. Elle Metz - 18:51
43. Erica Schertz - 19:02
48. Joanna Brodecki - 19:06
49. Marissa Speckmann - 19:07
78. Jamie Schertz - 19:44
Meet Results: http://www.dyestat.com/?pg=reg4il060916notredame
Next Week: After a few very intense weeks of racing, Nap. North is taking a down weekend with no racing.

10. Rockford, MI -

With the return of one of their top three girls, Rockford headed into the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State University Saturday looking to avenge their loss to MW #7 Saline from the prior weekend.  Not only did Rockford beat MW #5 Okemos and MW #7 Saline, they won the meet in grand fashio, placing three runners in the top eight and beating runner-up Livonia Churchill 109-141.  No team in the Midwest can match-up with Rockford's top three, except maybe MW #1 Westfield (IN) and MW #2 Waukesha West (WI).  The split 1-5 is enormous, being nearly two minutes, but for many top teams this is the case when you have excellent frontrunners.  Luckily Rockford has a split of only 18 seconds 1-3.  Other teams will challenge Rockford later in the year, but for now they are the favorites in Michigan.
4. Katie Haines - 18:58
5. Brittany Dixon - 19:01
8. Rachel Wittum - 19:16
28. Emma Crosby - 20:06
64. Ashley Stebbins - 20:52
65. Chelsea Shibler - 20:54
86. Kelcie Severson - 21:15
Meet Results: http://www.doitsports.com/newresults3/client/44741_131857_2006.txt
Next Week: Lowell Invitational, 9/23/06 - Being healthy is the number one concern for Rockford.  As long as that happens then they should cruise right through this weekend.
