Girls MW #1 Westfield, IN dominates in Illinois; Boys MW #5 LaSalle, OH loses!

Week Ending 9/09/06 Midwest Region

Scott Bush, NTN Midwest Editor

Girls

Boys

1. York, IL – Did not compete this past weekend.  York has yet to open up their season.  The Dukes often wait until the Palatine Invitational to kick-off their road to state/NTN.

Next Meet: Palatine Invitational (IL), 9/23/06 – York’s annual kick-off should be an interesting meet.

2. Warren Central, IN – Warren Central dominated the field at the Maconaquah Invitational on Saturday, beating runner-up Indianapolis Cathedral High School 41-69.  Central had a chance to show off some of its’ depth, as they placed their top six runners in the top 17 positions.  All-American De’Sean Turner led the charge, winning the meet in a course record time of 16:05 (5k), while senior teammate Ondraius Richardson took second.  A split of 73 seconds was a good gap, while third runner Cody Smith rounded back into his team position, as he had looked a bit off the first two weeks of the season.

3. Carmel, IN – After losing their first real test of the season two weeks ago down in Terre Haute (IN), Carmel bounced back strong and easily won their home invitational, the Carmel Classic (5k).  While Jacob Rich looked impressive as their front man, having the overall best time of the day in 16:15, last year’s number two runner Chad Bowman still is struggling a bit as he finished nearly a minute back from Rich.

Results:

Jacob Rich – 16:15
Logan Rosenberg – 17:00
J.D. Smith – 17:07

Chad Bowman – 17:10

Next Meet: Trinity Invitational (KY), 9/16/06 – Carmel heads south to take on the top teams in Kentucky, as well as MW #5 LaSalle.  Some interesting match-ups should take place.

4. Dexter, MI – Dexter road into the Tortoise and Hare Cross Country Classic (5k) looking to run strong 1-7 and they did just that as they trounced second place Monroe 30-77.  Junior star Bobby Aprill pulled away from his senior teammate Dan Jackson after the two mile and won the individual title in 15:55, while Jackson rolled in easily for second.  Dexter had two other top ten finishers and had a nice split of 40 seconds from 1-4.  Their fifth man Jason Bishop was a bit farther back in 17:03, however he was still less than 90 seconds back.

Next Meet: Nike Holly Invitational (MI), 9/16/06 – While most of the top teams in state will be traveling to Michigan State University to compete at the Spartan Invitational, Dexter will travel to the Holly Invitational.

5. LaSalle, OH – Heading into the Midwest Meet of Champions, LaSalle was the favorite and looked to be riding some solid momentum.  However once the race started, upstart Woodridge took control and never looked back as they beat LaSalle on each man and beat LaSalle 50-79.  LaSalle still ran well, as they placed their top four runners in the top twenty, with two of those four being in the top seven.  Their 1-5 split was less than a minute, which bodes well for the rest of the season.  However, they will need their 5-6 runners to get a bit closer to their fourth if they hope to jump back into the top five in the region.

Next Meet: Trinity Invitational (KY), 9/16/06 – LaSalle will get a chance to make up for their surprising loss this past weekend, as they will be taking on MW #3 Carmel and a host of other competitive teams.

6. Pinckney, MI – Did not compete this past weekend.  After opening up the season on a high note, Pinckney will look to face off against all of the top teams in Michigan this coming weekend.

Next Meet: Spartan Invitational (MI), 9/15/06 – At Michigan State University.  Pinckney will go head-to-head with the rest of the top teams in the state at this enormous invitational.

7. Sandburg, IL – Did not compete this past weekend.  After dominating their first two meets, Sandburg took a weekend to gear up for the big meet down in Peoria this coming weekend.

Next Meet: Peoria Notre Dame Invitational (IL), 9/16/06 – On state meet course.  Sandburg will face off against MW #8 Palatine and a few other top ranked Illinois squads.

8. Palatine, IL – Did not compete this past weekend.  Palatine won a dual meet earlier in the week against their cross-town opponents, scoring a mere 16 points.

Next Meet: Peoria Notre Dame Invitational (IL), 9/16/06 – The Pirates will race on the state meet course and go against state powers MW #7 Sandburg, Lincoln-Way East, Schaumburg and MW #9 Glenbard South.

9. Glenbard South, IL – Did not compete this past weekend.  After a fourth place finish two weeks ago, Glenbard South needed a solid two weeks of training and getting healthy.  The loss of #1 Brian Billie hurt the team severely in their first major invite of the season.

Next Meet: Peoria Notre Dame Invitational (IL), 9/16/06 – South will be looking to get back on track facing MW #7 Sandburg and MW #8 Palatine, as well as many other top Illinois teams.

10. St. John’s Jesuit, OH – This strong team from Ohio ran well to win the Tiffin Invitational on Saturday over a strong North Canton Hoover team, 148-193.  St. John’s Jesuit was led once again by their tri-fecta up top in Chris Lemon, Matt Lemon and Joe Miller, who all finished in the top seven with a nice split of six seconds.  No team in Ohio can beat this team up front through three runners.  However, as it will be most of the year, the team’s 4-6 runners will need to run a little bit better each week if they hope to win state.  With about a 90 second split between their third and fifth runner, this will really hurt this team when it comes to bigger and stronger invitationals.

Girls

1. Westfield, IN – Traveling into Illinois to take on some of the best that Illinois has to offer was coach Scott Lidskin’s plan.  Westfield traveled to Peoria, IL and ran on the Illinois state meet course.  The results were impressive as Westfield destroyed their competition and showed why they are the top team in the Midwest as they beat runner-up Barrington 45-113.  The team was once again led by Kristina Krasich and had a friendly 58-second split from 1-5, which is mighty impressive.  Placing four runners in the top twelve was a great result as well, as there was a lot of solid talent in the field.

2. Kristina Krasich – 17:47
4. Maggie Bingham – 18:03

106. Kimmy Robertson – 20:06

Next Meet: Off.

2. Naperville North, IL – A week after losing to one of the top three teams in the Heartland, Naperville North returned back to their winning ways, although it was a lot tougher than some expected.  North won just barely over a very good Hinsdale Central squad 66-67.  The return of Maggie DeBerge was all the difference, as North placed their top five in the top twenty spots.  A positive was that they had a very nice 46 second split, although they are lacking a solid front-runner at this point.

31. Sharon Feltes – 19:26

35. Marissa Speckmann – 19:38

Next Meet: Peoria Notre Dame Invitational, 9/16/06 – This next weekend will give Naperville North another hard race, as they will head down state to the state meet course.  Running on the course will give them an indication as to just how good they are compared to MW #1 Westfield, who dominated the competition on the same course last weekend.

3. Waukesha West, WI – Did not compete this past weekend.  This past weekend was a good chance for West to rest up and get in some solid training.

Next Meet: Marquette Invitational, 9/16/06.

4. Wheaton North, IL – The pressure was on at the Peoria Woodruff Invitational this past weekend.  Wheaton North knew that MW #1 Westfield was going to be attending this meet and what a story it would have been had they beaten them.  However, Wheaton North was surprised by unranked Barrington and wound up placing third with 134 points, nearly 100 off of Westfield.  Jackie Laesch and Cassidy Wagner both could have had better races, while their 3-5 runners packed up nicely to a solid 9 second split.

Next Meet: Kaneland Invitational, 9/16/06.  This low-intensity meet will be merely a warm-up to the following weekend when they take on MW #2 Naperville North at their own invitational.

5. Okemos, MI – Pending.

Results:

Next Meet: Spartan Invitational, 9/15/06 – Like most other teams in Michigan, Okemos will travel to Michigan State University to take on most of the top teams in the state.  This includes MW #8 Clarkston and MW #9 Rockford.

6. Valparaiso, IN – Did not compete this past weekend.

Next Meet: New Prairie Invitational, 9/16/06.

7. Bowling Green, OH – Bowling Green didn’t run the most perfect race they could and still ran over the competition at the famous Midwest Meet of Champions.  They proved once again that they are worthy of a top five regional ranking, as they won the meet 70-94 over St. Ursula Academy (OH).  Christy Titus and Barbara Powers led the way once again and were helped by three other finishers in the top twenty-five.  Shannon Titus probably could have run a touch better, but overall this was a great effort!

41. Andrea Renny – 21:06

Next Meet: Galion Invitational, 9/16/06.

8. Clarkston, MI – With the loss of Stephanie Morgan affecting their top points, Clarkston finished a disappointing sixth place at the Midwest Meet of Champions, scoring 154 points.  The lack of a frontrunner really hurt this squad, as they may now be the fourth or fifth best team in Michigan.  Having a 1-5 split of nearly a minute and a half does not help either.  They will really need to regroup and have some solid races if they hope to jump back into the top ten regionally.

Next Meet: Spartan Invitational, 9/15/06 – Clarkston will get a chance to redeem themselves after a disappointed sixth place finish this last weekend.  They will face off against most of the top teams in Michigan, including MW #5 Okemos and MW #9 Rockford.

9. Rockford, MI – The Bath Classic is always a solid meet that produces some intriguing results and this year was no different.  Rockford tied with unranked Saline, each scoring 45 points, although Rockford lost on the tiebreaker.  And their loss was not because of a bad effort.  Katie Haines and Brittany Dixon did their duty with a 1-2 sweet and they had three other runners in the top 17 slots.  The gap however from 2-3 was nearly a minute however and that is how they lost.

Next Meet: Spartan Invitational, 9/15/06 – Taking on two top ten Midwest teams in Okemos and Clarkston will be a good challenge after a disappointing loss this past weekend to Saline.

10. Minster, OH – The Tiffin Invitational is one of the best invites all season long in Ohio.  Spread throughout many races and divisions, Minster rose to the top and won the Division III race 47-141.  With a strong effort up top by their top four athletes, Minster proved that they could possibly be the best team in Ohio.  Star runner Bernadette Burke led the way with an impressive win in 18:38.  Three others paced Minster with top ten finishes and their number five was less than two minutes off of their potential Footlocker frontrunner.
