BOYS

SO#1/US#10 The Woodlands TX

crushed the competition at the District 15-5A meet on its home course. The course was modified due to heavy rains the day before, but that didn’t slow down the Highlanders attack. The Woodlands packed 7 in the top 10 with a 38 second 1-5 spread, scoring 20 points. Local rival College Park, in only its 2nd year of existence after splitting off from The Woodlands, tallied 64 in the runner-up spot with no seniors in its line-up. The Woodlands sr Alex Neff led throughout, cruising home in 16:35, with early challenger Magnolia jr Michael Cook hanging on for 2nd in 16:50.

The Woodlands Coach Dan Green said, "Our team did what it had to do. The conditions were terrible, but we rose to the occasion to earn our 28th Varsity District Championship out of 29 (years in our school’s existence)."

was upset at District 15-5A, as local rival College Park upended the Highlanders squad 34-41. College Park capitalized on a 2-3-4 finish by Kate Hatley, Elie Schultz and Ashley Albores. Another key factor was the finishing straight collapse by Woodlands sr Adrienne DiRaddo, who had led the entire race before dehydration and exhaustion took their toll in the damp and humid conditions. She was able to stagger and crawl home in a painful-to-watch 12th place. Magnolia’s Taylor Cloy earned individual gold, clocking 12:41.

"My girls have really done a great job this year," said College Park Coach Andrea Kaylor, the state 800 champ in 1998. "It has been such a transition from having no varsity team last year (school opened its doors last fall) to having a full team of runners this year. It has really taken them all year to learn to run as a team. The region meet is going to be very competitive. I have tried hard to peak them well, so hopefully they will continue to improve. It will probably come down to a lot of teams’ fourth and fifth runners."
