SO#2 Tupelo girls win at home, OK small schools state meet, many ranked teams out-of-action

boys - girls BOYS SO#1/US#10 The Woodlands TX
did not race this week. They did "compete" in the annual Red vs. Green inter-squad 3200 meter time trial on the track. The results were impressive - sr Alex Neff ran 9:12 and was joined by 11 others under 10:00. Plus 3 team members who have previously broken 10:00 did not participate, including #2 man Evan Blair. "The guys had a super effort, said Coach Dan Green. "Things really lined up well for most everyone; the weather, the training phase, the time of the year. This does show our potential, and that our team is improving as planned. However, we must keep in mind that the State meet is three weeks away and this has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the State Title."

hosted an invitational which is typically a low-key affair against local schools. This year, Ruston, a top 10 Louisiana team, made the trip which added some excitement. Even so, it was all Tupelo again with 20 points, 5 in the top 7 and a 16:28 average. Tupelo jr Rob Ellis and sr Drew Kellum finished 1-2. Ruston had a good showing, claiming silver with 43 points and averaging 17:02, led by jr LaDarion Outley’s 16:29 in 3rd.

Sequoyah Tahlequah OK struck gold at the Oklahoma 2A state meet, edging Watonga OK 65-69. Talequah won its 4th straight title by bunching 5 in the top 19, overcoming a 1-3 Watonga finish by defending champ sr Josh Doyel (16:12) and Daniel Huffman (16:51). At the Texas private schools (TAPPS) state meet, El Paso Cathedral nipped Central Catholic of San Antonio 69-71 for the 6A championship. Nolan Catholic took the bronze with 75. St Pius X jr Joey D'Eramo won the individual title in 17:00.20 followed by Nolan soph Thomas Bobbitt in 17:09.21. Br Martin LA hosted the 1st annual Jack Schommer Invite, named in memory of the school’s first and long-time cross country coach. Jesuit LA captured the team trophy with 37 points, with 6 in the top 13 and a 35 second 1-5 spread. Rummel LA sr Alex Lorio broke the tape, clocking 16:14 for 3 miles.

13 Chad Guidry, Jesuit, 17:03 The action was hot and heavy at the Oklahoma Large school Regionals. In Tulsa, Jenks squeaked by Tulsa Union 64-65 in 5A. The teams’ average times were separated by less than a second. Owasso sr Kendall Robbins was the overall winner in 16:09.33. Bishop Kelley scored 26 to demolish the 4A field. Meanwhile, at the other 5A Regional in Edmond, Mustang sr Kevin Schwab cruised home in 15:26, ahead of Yukon sr Mitch Ownbey’s 15:48, the same order as last year’s state meet. Schwab’s victory helped his team ease past Edmond Memorial 57-59. Deer Creek tallied 35 to wallop its 4A opposition, while Deer Creek jr Adam Young captured the individual crown. Pearl MS claimed the St Andrews Invite, scoring 47 points with a 17:47 average for 5k. Madison Central MS snared silver with 53 points.

was joined at its home invite by Ruston, the #5 ranked Louisiana team, which had captured the team title at the Mississippi College Invite last week, site of the MS state meet. Corinth soph Katlyn Will took individual honors in 14:36, but a stream of Tupelo girls followed. Sr Emily Crow led the charge, taking 2nd (1st team scorer) in 14:50, and the squad tallied 17 points with a 15:15 average and a 49 second 1-5 spread. Ruston nabbed silver with 38 points, showing good depth by averaging 15:58. Ruston sr Reed Williams was 5th overall in 15:26.

Bishop Lynch sr Kinsey Farren claimed her 3rd straight individual crown in 11:24. Next was Ursuline’s 1-2 punch of sr Becky Wade in 2nd (11:35) and soph Melanie Wilcox in 3rd (12:03).

OTHER RESULTS:
Plainview OK dominated the Oklahoma 2A state meet with 38 points and a 12:20 average for 3200 meters. Plainview was led by the individual champ, freshman sensation Amber Harper in 11:45, and classmate Tess Lackey’s 11:55 3rd place showing. Chisholm OK slipped past Sequoyah Tahlequah OK 70-74 for silver.
St Joseph’s Academy LA scored 49 to take team honors at the Ragin' Cajun Invite hosted by the U of Louisiana-Lafayette. Barbe LA, running without the state’s top returnee, sr Lydia Woodward, garnered 2nd with 53 points. Mt Carmel LA captured the bronze with 75. Barbe sr Amy Guinn topped the field, posting 18:41 for 3 miles. Sacred Heart sr Simone Domingue took the small school race in 18:42.
At the Oklahoma Regional in Tulsa, Jenks won 5A decisively, 49-86 over Tulsa Union. Bartlesville was 3rd with 91. Tulsa Union jr Sara Vaughn took the 5A individual title in 11:46. In the other Regional in Edmond, the 5A crown went to Edmond Memorial with 71, just ahead of rival Edmond North’s 75. Westmoore was 3rd with 90. Westmoore soph Katelin Cherry, the top state returnee, bested the field in 11:30. Bishop McGuinness grabbed 4A honors with 30 points.
At the St Andrews (MS) Invite, the host school put up a fight before succumbing to Pearl MS, 31-48.
