Midlothian girls pulled off the big shocker in winning the Eastern States Championship race at Manhattan Invitational against the nation's best teams including US #1 and defending Nike Team Nationals champions Hilton of New York. WIth 148 points, Coach Stan Morgan's Lady Trojans finished ahead of not only Hilton but SE #1 Eleanor Roosevelt of Maryland (2nd, 172 pts), NE #3 Saratoga Springs of New York (3rd, 190 pts), and Hilton (4th, 203 pts). It was also a great day for the Southeast region with three of the top five finishing teams against some of the best team's in the nation and Northeast region with Midlothian, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Tatnall of Delaware (5th, 229) giving the region great legitimacy for an at-large berth for Nike Team Nationals.
Top finisher for the Midlothian girls was once again freshmen Kathleen Lautzenheiser as she covered the 2.5 mile course in a time of 14:50.9 for a 14th place finish. Lautzenheiser was joined in the top 20 by her twin sister, Leia Lautzenheiser in 18th at 14:58.2 and lone Midlothian senior M.C. Miller in 19th at 15:01.5. The three runners certainly stepped up and silenced the doubters that Midlothian lacked the front running to compete with the nation's top programs as well regional foes Eleanor Roosevelt of Maryland and Episcopal of Florida. Midlothian had three runners in before Episcopal's first finisher in Maggie Traylor (33rd, 15:17.5) and matched up well with Eleanor Roosevelt's solid front three in Marika Walker (10th, 14:44.5), Teshika Rivers (20th, 15:03.7), and Dominique Lockhart (31st, 15:16.8).
Midlothian's strength was expected to come in their number four and five spots and as was the case with junior Sammy Dow (41st, 15:27.2) and sophomore Paige Johnston (53rd, 15:38.8) finishing ahead of any other team's fourth and fifth runners with the exception of Eleanor Roosevelt's Jennifer Redman (37th, 15:21.9) stepping up with a big race as the team's fourth.
Midlothian head coach Stan Morgan was talking to Saratoga Springs head coach Art Kranick at the meet and telling him how he had always aspired to have a program like Kranick's at Saratoga. Kranick quickly turned to Morgan and said, "Stan, you already have a great program!" With Midlothian likely to be elevated to a number one ranking in the Southeast ranking and as well as make a considerable leap from their current #18 national ranking in Marc Bloom's Harrier Super 25 in the next edition, he certainly has a program to be proud of.
It was not only a coming out party for the Midlothian girls but the Southeast Region as a whole as Eleanor Roosevelt and Tatnall certainly did not hurt their cases for NTN berths with a second and fifth place finish respectively at Manhattan. A victory over last year's top two finishing teams at Nike Team Nationals in champion Hilton and Saratoga Springs at Van Courtland Park by Eleanor Roosevelt is not to be completely overshadowed by Midlothian's upset win. Coach Desmond Dunham's girls had a great day in New York City and should be recognized for the team performance. Walker was the second highest finisher among the Southeast girls and Redman came up big as the team's fourth runner and finishing not far behind of the team's top runners in Dominique Lockhart. Lockhart, who was only competing in her second race coming off of injury this season, can certainly show better than her 31st place effort at Van Courtland and make Eleanor Roosevelt tougher to beat in a likely return trip to Oregon.
Tatnall is another Southeast team that ran exceptionally well to finish fifth overall with 229 points and 26 points off of defending NTN champions Hilton, but also can get stronger from here until NTN with their top returning runner Katie Kershner also competing in only her second race this season after missing the first half of the season with injury. Kershner was not even allowed to run last month and now finds herself running #3 (48th, 15:33.8) for Coach Patrick Castagno's girls. Sophomore Juliet Bottorff has continued to run stellar in the lead runner spot that Kershner held last year as Saturday at Manhattan was no exception with Bottorff as the Southeast region's top finisher in eighth place with a time of 14:40.
There were winners and losers on the day for the Southeast region in the Eastern States Championship race as while Midlothian was a big winner with their surprise win, the opposite end of emotions were felt by the Episcopal girls, who finished a disheartening ninth place and put their NTN return trip hopes suddenly in jeopardy. Almost a crazy thought to imagine virtually the same team that finished 12th at last year's Nike Team Nationals and won Great American last month over Midlothian and Tatnall, now finds themselves on the outside and looking in for a NTN berth. Coach Michelle Krueger's girls were willing to make the long trip to New York City from Jacksonville to face the best competition on the East Coast. They could have just as easily stayed home in Florida after the win in Hoover and try to ride out the win at Great American to another trip to Oregon, but wanted to prove themselves outside of the Southeast region against some of the nation's best teams found in the Northeast.
However, off days from several of their top runners ended up putting Florida's top team in a distant ninth place showing with 274 points. Second highest finisher at Great American in Laura Steel was not the only Episcopal girl with an off day, but was the most noticeable finishing seventh for the team in 104th place (16:19.4). Swing her back up to her usual position up front and there could be a point swing of over 60 points to put Episcopal back into the team hunt. Accountability of the poor showing though cannot lie directly on Steel though as other Episcopal runners had seen better days. Also, Midlothian, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Tatnall all had gained valuable experience last year in competing in the Eastern States division at Manhattan, while this year was Episcopal's first trip to the highly competitive meet.
The Southeast certainly has certainly made a case for an at-large berth based on the performances from Manhattan, but is a second one also possible? Last year, the Northwest region was awarded two at-large berths and even the Southeast showed those at-large bids could have gone elsewhere with Eleanor Roosevelt and Episcopal both beating three of the four Northwest teams (thus, including an automatic berth team also). There is no question the Northeast is still one of the deepest regions in the country with five teams finishing ahead of Episcopal at Manhattan from the region as well as NE #2 Radnor of Pennsylvania missing from the meet. No matter how the selection process turns out for NTN in regards to at-large berths, the Southeast has made believers out of many now across the nation.

After making a quick rise in the regional rankings from being unranked to #5 in the region after a decisive victory at the Wendy's Invitational, the bull's eye was now on them at Furman Invitational in South Carolina. One of Tennessee's best teams in Morristown West and SE #8 Collins Hill of Georgia certainly made the newly ranked South Carolina team work for the win as Mauldin came out of the meet with a narrow seven point victory over unranked Morristown West. Coach Howell was familar with the Morristown West team as both teams attend the Brevard Running Camp in the summer together. However, he was quite surprised by the challenge they gave his team. "We were looking for Collins Hill as our competition. I had not counted on Morristown West as a real threat." In the first mile though, Morristown West made it known they came ready to take down the #5 ranked Mauldin girls. It was not until the final 75 yards in the race that Mauldin's fourth and fifth runners in freshmen Caroline McDonough (13th, 19:54) and Renee Kulik (16th, 20:00) were able to sprint away from Morristown West's Emily Parker (17th, 20:02) and Terra Haggard (20th, 20:10) to give the team the points separation they needed for the win. Mauldin had a solid front three up front in junior Alyssa Kulik (4th, 19:06), freshmen Alexa Neiling (7th, 19:29), and junior Hannah Morgan (8th, 19:31).
Coach Howell was very pleased though with how his young girls teams responded to their first major test as a high profile team in the region. "It was very rewarding for Mauldin to understand during the race that our plan had to change and they had to do it. You fight all the way to the chute. My girls were composed of three ninth graders and two juniors. That showed maturity in getting the job done." Mauldin girls look to be a year away from knocking heads with the region's best that were present at Manhattan with a full squad returning for 2007, but still are focused toward the South Carolina State Meet in which Mauldin will be going for its 14th state championshion in cross country with Howell under the helm.
Morristown West definitely made a case for themselves to be ranked in the top ten for this week finishing a close second to Mauldin. Both Mauldin and Morristown West had less than stellar days at Great American last month. Morristown was four points off of Maudlin at Spain Park in 15th place with Mauldin in 14th. The improvements made by both squads since then can be shown in relation to how they performed against SE #8 Collins Hill at Furman, who finished seventh and over 60 points ahead of both teams at Great American.
Collins Hill was competing without their regular #2 runner Erin Guglielmo, but even with her in the lineup, Georgia's top ranked team would have been in a close battle with Morristown West for second. Collins Hill was led by race champion Jackie Drouin in a time of 18:16 and Allyson McGinty (5th, 19:16) joined teammate Drouin with a top five finish.
Morristown had four finishers in the top 20 with seniors Haley Moody (3rd, 18:52), Tara Gietema (6th, 19:17), Tesha Haggard (9th, 19:33), Terra Haggard (12th, 20:10), and sophomore Emily Parker (17th, 20:02).

Facing very little competition against local competition at the VMI Invitational, the SE #9 Blacksburg girls easily rolled over the field with a low team score of 21 points and five finishers in the top 13 places including race champion Allison Homer. Homer won in a time of 19:07 on a fairly challenging 5K course layout at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Virginia. The strength of Blacksburg was apparent again in their front three with Laurel MacMillan (2nd, 19:27) and Cate Berenato (4th, 19:52) also have strong runs for Blacksburg to finish in the top four. Hannah Barrow had one of her best races of the season as the team's fourth runner to finish seventh overall in a time of 20:04. Avery Mattingly rounded out the team's scoring in 13th place (21:07).

The turnaround performances by the Hermitage VA and Fort Mill SC boys forced some top ranked teams in the Southeast region to drop to make room for the surprising team performances by the unranked squads. Fort Mill had nearly knocked off in SE #2 Chapel Hill NC at the Wendy's Invitational with only a three point loss after finishing 11th at the Maymont Festival the week before in which Chapel Hill won the meet. One team that felt slighted by the drop down was Coach James Tigue's boys from Parkview GA, who were ranked fourth in the region the week prior.
Parkview was the Southeast region's third highest finishing team at Great American in September despite having several off races on the day from some of their key runners that could have made them competitively close to the Southeast's second highest finishing team in Brentsville on the day. With Brentsville suffering a defeat last weekend at the hands of Hermitage at the Disney Classic, Chapel Hill moved up as a result into the #2 slot in the region, but Parkview is a team that feels that they could make a case for that position as well as look to start to put it together as a team entering championship season.
With a common opponent in Fort Mill and only a week to separate the two encounters between Chapel Hill and Parkview, Parkview certainly beat Fort Mill more decisively by a 54 point margin compared to Chapel Hill's 3 point win at Wendy's. However, Fort Mill was not racing at full strength with their seventh grade phenom Mark Blackmon missing due to a family health emergency and fifth runner Josh Mabry was also absent due to SAT's.
Coach Tigue for Parkview knew Fort Mill would be missing Blackmon, but still wanted to make an impression with a convincing victory. " I figured the only way we could show we belong in the top 3 was to have 2 in front of Fort Mill's #1." Parkview did just that as both Josh Pinson (4th, 16:18) and Michael Winston (5th, 16:19) crossed the line before the team's top finisher in David Huckaby (7th, 16:34). Parkview junior Marcelis Lynch, who had been bothered in earlier season races in the heat as he was adjusting to his recent diagnosis of exercise-induced asthma, ran his best race of the season with the cooler fall temperatures as he was only eight seconds off of Fort Mill's top finisher Huckaby. Fort Mill senior David Willis, who had ran ahead of Blackmon and Huckaby at Wendy's last weekend as the team's #1 runner posting a 15:37 5K at McAlpine, did not fare as well at Furman finishing 16th in a time of 16:54.
Rounding out the top five scoring for Parkview were Brian Detweiler (18th, 17:06) and JJ Van Tonder (25th, 17:19) as the team finished with a team score of 56 points.
With both Blackmon and Mabry missing, Fort Mill was bound to be exposed as they had to rely on runners further than down the depth chart than they usually would. Daniel Kalshoven stepped up through to run #3 for the team after running #6 last weekend at Wendy's. Travis Owens (36th, 17:37) also had an off day along with Willis after running a 16:09 5K last weekend.

FEATURED TEAMS: SE #6 - Jamestown VA
Probably a team one year away from making serious noise on the Southeast regional scene with only one senior among their top seven and also three freshmen being found in their varsity lineup, SE #6 Jamestown had a fair showing and gained great experience in competing at the Manhattan Invitational as they finished a close fourth with 144 points (1 point behind New York's Guiderland) as Smithtown of New York won the varsity C division with 60 points and had the third fastest team average on the day behind two NTN Northeast ranked teams in Shenendehowa of New York and Danbury of Connecticut.
Jamestown had a total time of 67:48 and had a team average of 13:33 as they had four runners under 14 minutes on the 2.5 mile course as they were led by top 20 finishes from a trio of runners in Andrew Mearns (11th, 13:10.9), Andrew Colley (16th, 13:17.9), and John Holt (19th, 13:27.9). Mearns is a senior, while Colley and Holt are only sophomores. Rounding out the team's scoring were freshmen Colin Mearns (37th, 13:48.5) and junior Raymond Hutchinson. While 2005 conditions were not as ideal as 2006, compare the the times of the Jamestown boys to the times posted by two Virginia teams in Midlothian and Brentsville, who are currently ranked #1 and #4 in the region.

Spooner's Spartans were in a close battle as well with SE #8 Quince Orchard of Maryland, but it would Coach Seann Pelkey's crew from Maryland that would come out on top with their second major invitational win in Virginia in as many weeks.
Quince Orchard's depth played a key role in the 11 point victory over SE #7 West Springfield as they placed seven runners ahead of West Springfield's fifth runner.
Quince Orchard juniors Neal Darmoody (13th, 16:02) and David Laratta (14th, 16:05) led the team with top 15 finishes. Senior Greg Bove (25th, 16:29) and juniors Artem Panasenkov (44th, 16:45), and Mike Midgall (46th, 16:46) rounded out the team's scoring to nearly put six runners under 17 minutes on the quick 5K course with junior Jeremiah Joson (61st, 17:00) running sixth for the team.
The gap could have been great between Quince Orchard and West Springfield as one of the team's top runners in Reagan Lynch had an off day in 73rd place with a time of 17:06.
Spooner is the top ranked runner in the state and now West Springfield have one of the best duos in the state given the recent improvements made by fellow Spartans senior Alex Martis as he made his first appearances in the AAA state rankings a few weeks ago and at Glory Days, posted a personal best 5K time of 15:58 to finish eighth against some solid competition.
Like Quince Orchard, West Springfield also had a runner with a subpar race that could have swung the team scoring in their favor also with senior Leo Walker (29th, 16:33) finishing further back than Coach Vic Kelbaugh would have liked. However, junior Loring Ross continues to run well this season as he stepped up into the number three spot in 27th place at 16:31.
It was actually quite surprising how well West springfield finished in the Glory Days field given the fact the size of the field was double the size found at Maymont in which West Springfield's fifth runner did not hurt them as much. However, West Springfield junior Alex Kinglsey pulled through with a decent race as the team's fifth runner in 88th place (17:20). Nonetheless, other regional foes such as Oakton and Thomas Jefferson were expected to pounce on the opportunity to expose West Springfield's lack of depth after four, but neither Oakton nor Thomas Jefferson were able to take advantage on Saturday.
Oakton finished third with 180 points, while Thomas Jefferson was a distance fifth with 233 points as defending Group A state champions Clarke County slipped ahead in fourth with 225 points.
Oakton was led up front by Joe LoRusso (15th, 16:09) and Alex Nissen (16th, 16:10). Despite having five more finishers in before West Springfield's Kingsley, Oakton did not have enough fire power up front to match up with West Springfield's tough top four with Brian Hendricks (32nd, 16:35), Matt Saunders (48th, 16:47), Tony Smith (71st, 17:05), Russel Fielding (75th, 17:09), and Chris Weil (82nd, 17:16). Oakton's depth extended into the varsity B race with two runners who would have ran top five for Oakton in the seeded race with Neal Hendricks (4th, 16:43) and Scott Maxfield (10th, 16:50). Coach Kelbaugh at West Springfield and Coach Phil Tiller at Oakton may want to make a trade to find the missing pieces both teams are looking for. A front runner for a fifth man.
Thomas Jefferson finished a distant fifth with 233 points, but easily could have 70 points swing in their favor with their top runner in Paul Norland being disqualified in the chute for unsportsmanlike conduct. Norland had finished in approximately 7th place and at a time of 15:57. One of Thomas Jefferson's top five runners in Aiden McHugh was also not figured in the team's scoring as he sat out the meet with a minor injury. Certainly with the two figured back into the scoring, Thomas Jefferson is back in the mix.
While warriors in battle on Saturday, Quince Orchard and coach Seann Pelkey are now the biggest fans of the West Springfield boys as they Spartans enter championship season and eventually will have their first head-to-head encounter with SE #1 Midlothian in the AAA race at the VHSL State Cross Country Meet. The same goes for Oakton and Thomas Jefferson as well.
Quince Orchard definitely has a fine squad this season and will have another tough squad next season with only two seniors in their top seven. Quince Orchard also had a junior break 17 minutes in the varsity B race with Ryan Priovolos finishing ninth in a time of 16:48.
