Boys 3200: Dorrell surprises Footlocker finalists Spooner and Graves with US #1

Blacksburg VA junior Peter Dorrell had been tearing it up lately on the indoor tracks this winter and in particular at Liberty University. Dorrell last week had an impressive double at the Asics Invitational in Lynchburg with personal best times of 4:18 for 1600 meters and 9:23 for 3200 meters in two victories. Despite Dorrell's recent performances indicating his great level of fitness, he was still the underdog heading into Friday night's 3200 meter run at Virginia Tech featuring two Footlocker finalists from this past fall in Mike Spooner from West Springfield VA and Griff Graves from Abingdon VA. After all, Spooner was a two-time Virginia 3A state champion in the event, while Graves had a state best of 9:14 last spring as sophomore.

There was little strategy for three of Virginia's better distance runners and Spooner cranked out a brisk early pace with Dorrell and Graves clipping on his heels. Spooner brought the trio through the first 1600 meters in 4:35. Graves then made a move in the next 800 meters to take the lead, but his time up front was short lived as Dorrell then put on a strong surge to break away from Graves and Spooner. Dorrell, who finished 16th in the seeded race at Footlocker South, knocked 13 seconds off his personal best from last weekend with a US #1 time of 9:10.76. Spooner finished runner-up to Dorrell in his second 9:18 performance this season, while Graves finished third in 9:24.38. Graves is currently training for USA Cross Country Nationals in Boulder, Colorado on February 10th under the guidance of NAIA's Virginia Intermont College coach Scott Simmons.

Dorrell and Graves will meet again at the end of the indoor season at the Virginia 2A State Meet to be held in March at Liberty University.

Girls 3200: Midlo's Dow overtakes early leader Soo for PR win

While the 3200 meter run did not feature "stud" girls as Saturday's distance races would have in the 1000 meter and mile races, the race did have some excitement to it with the race being a bit more wide open. Durham Academy NC sophomore Adrianne Soo led for the majority of the race and had separated herself from the rest of the field. However, Midlothian VA junior Samantha Dow was able to reel Soo in and had a strong last lap to pick up the 11:08.29. Dow's time was a personal best by 10 seconds, while Soo ended up finishing two seconds behind at 11:10.79. Midlothian had two of the top three finishers with junior Erin Stehle in third at 11:18.01.

Boys 1000: Ferris leads wire to wire, barely holds off furious late charge by Moen, US #5

Returning North Carolina state champion for 800 meters as well as one of the nation's top returnees in the event with a 1:51.95 best last spring in Dylan Ferris of East Forsyth NC was looking to post a fast time at Virginia Tech in the comparable indoor middle distance event. He did not let the field pull him to a fast time as he shot to the front from the start and pressed the pace. Ferris went through 200 meters in 30 seconds, 400 meters in 1:00, 600 meters in 1:31, and 800 meters in 2:02 while the next pack stayed a few seconds behind.

However, at the start of the bell lap, New Balances Games high school mile winner Chris Moen of Walter Johnson MD had moved to the front of chase pack after lingering in the middle of the pack throughout the race. Moen had originally intended to compete in the invite mile at Virginia Tech, but with the thought of having four straight weekends of highly competitive mile races (set to compete in Millrose Games next weekend) possibly made Moen reconsider to scratch from the mile and enter in the 1000 for some variety in racing. Moen put on a furious kick on the final lap and gained considerable ground on Ferris on the backstretch and on the final turn. It appeared Moen had the momentum to overtake Ferris as they swung off the final turn, but Ferris was able to withstand Moen's kick for a 2:30.91 win in a photo finish (see above). Moen nearly snuck by with the win as only five hundredths of a second separated him from Ferris with a final time of 2:30.96. Ferris and Moen's times are ranked fith and sixth respectively in the nation.

Girls 1000: Depth in event shown with top 2 times coming out of section #2

Walt Whitman MD jr Leslie Morrison beats fastest time out of top section in section 2 at 2:57.04 with Montgomery Blair MD sr Ashlyn Sinclair finishing right behind at 2:58.96 to beat top section's fastest time.

Eleanor Roosevelt MD jr Tasha Stanley outkicks Great Bridge VA sr Kristy Tobin for a 3:00.08 win in the top section and finish 3rd overall.

The 1000 meter run for the girls was perhaps the deepest distance event this weekend in Blacksburg as ten athletes went under 3:05 and 12 more runners were under 3:10. The depth was clearly shown by the performances recorded in the section following the "fast" section. Eleanor Roosevelt MD junior Tasha Stanley thought she had claimed the overall win by sprinting past Great Bridge VA senior Kristy Tobin on the final lap of the seeded section with a final time of 3:00.08. However, fellow middle distance stars from Maryland in Walt Whitman MD junior Leslie Morrison and Montgomery MD senior Ashlyn Sinclair had other plans.

Morrison had beaten Stanley earlier in the season in a win in the 800 meter run at the Montgomery County Invitational only a few weeks ago and came out on top again without having to actually race her. Morrison ran an outstanding opening 1200 meter leg on Friday night to put Walt Whitman well out in front against the likes of Stanley's Eleanor Roosevelt girls and Midlothian VA and conluded her weekend with a 2:57.04 win in the 1000 meter run. She also helped pull Blair's Sinclair in for a fast time also (2:58.96) as the state of Maryland swept the top three places. Ironically, when Eleanor Roosevelt coach Desmond Dunham had been approached by the NSSF's Mike Byrnes last week in entering Stanley into the 1000 meter run for the elite high school 1000 meter field at the Collegiate Games on February 3rd, Dunham told Byrnes that he should try to get Whitman's Morrison into the meet before his athlete.

Boys Invitational Mile: Comeback kick gives Spooner victory over Dorrell

West Springfield VA senior Mike Spooner won the invitational mile on pure toughness. It almost looked like the race would be a repeat of Friday night's 3200 meter race. Spooner led once again as he brought the field through the first half mile in 2:10. West Johnston NC senior Dakota Lowery, competing for the second weekend alongside Spooner in an invite mile race (New Balances Games last week), took over pacing duties on the next lap to bring them through 1000 meters in 2:41. After Lowery stepped up the pace, Friday night's US #1 3200 meter winner made a similar decisive move, which had gave him the win in the 3200 meter run, on the sixth lap to break away from Lowery and Spooner.

Lowery and Spooner were dropping back from Dorrell as they entered the bell lap, but Spooner summoned his great determination on the backstretch to make up the difference and found himself in a stride for stride battle to the line first between Dorrell. In very similar fashion to his come from behind state championship for 3200 meters last spring over Mountain View VA's Thomas Porter, Spooner was able to nip Dorrell right at the line for a 4:17.70 personal best win. Dorrell ran a personal best as well of 4:18.01 to finish with arguably the best distance double of the meet.

Girls Invitational Mile: Chantilly's DiValentin continues hot streak of racing in VT mile

After running a US #5 time for 3200 meters of 10:49 last weekend at UNC's Eastern Challenge, Chantilly sophomore Lia DiValentin continued with her hot streak of great races at Virginia Tech by defeating a quality field of distane runners in the invitational mile in a personal best time of 5:02.70. DiValentin found herself leading a trio at the halfway point in 2:31, which had separated from the rest of the field. Joining DiValentin up front were Eleanor Roosevelt MD's Maria Walker and Walt Whitman MD's Morgane Gay. Walker had anchored a 5:04 split as the 1600 meter leg for Eleanor Roosevelt's US #3 winning DMR. It was made a race in the last half by Gay though as she took the lead from DiValentin with 600 meters to go. Gay led DiValentin and Walker until the final lap when DiValentin closed with a 33 second last lap to scoot past Gay for the win. Walker (5:04.01) nipped state rival Gay (5:04.52) at the line for second place.
