Summary of Southeast Top Ten, Week Ending Sept. 29, 2007

By Brett Honeycutt, Dyestat SE Regional Editor

Boys - Girls

BOYS

No surprise that the best meet in the Southeast was the McDonald’s Maymont Cross Country Festival with six Southeast ranked teams (No. 1 Oakton, VA; No. 3 Jamestown, VA; No. 4 Mountain View, VA; No. 5 Midlothian, VA; No. 8 Walton, GA; and No. 10 Oak Ridge, TN) and four more bubble teams (Brentsville, VA; Brookwood, GA; Mooresville, NC and Western Alamance, VA).

Oakton beat all of the Southeast teams, but finished second to MW bubble team Medina (OH), 134-146 on the Maymont Park course, which is fairly hilly with a big hill about 800 to 900 meters from the finish line.

All SE Ranked teams and Bubble teams finished in the top 11 of the 21-team meet.

1. Medina (MW Bubble team), 134 points, 16:28 per runner avg.
2. Oakton (SE No. 1), 146 points, 16:34 avg.
3. Midlothian (SE No. 5), 162 pts, 16:29 avg.

2.QUINCE ORCHARD (MD)
Ran twice, in low-key dual-scored meet on Tuesday and at Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh in Bethlehem, PA this past Saturday. Coach considers this past Saturday's meet the start of the season and a perfect way to get started (strong showing by Quince Orchard).
At Saturday's meet, No. 4 Runner (Ryan Priovolos) was in the top 50 with less than a mile left, but turned his ankle and did not finish. (If Priovolos would have finished, likely would not have made a difference in team scoring).

Course: fast, weather was great. The race was pulled off starting line for a 30 minute lightning delay. Coach says he doesn't think the rain slowed the course down much at all.
At Lehigh, Quince Orchard was second to US No. 14/NE No. 3 Germantown Friends, 124-156. Rounding out the top five: Cumberland Valley (163), Penncrest (202) and La Salle (227).

WESTMINSTER (GA)
On Tuesday, Wesminster had a home tri meet against Holy Innocence and Wesleyan (Top 10 all-class Georgia team all season). Wesleyan ran without their No. 1 (sickness), but it wouldn't have made a difference. Westminster won handily (22-33).
The course runs very slow -- roughly 20-30 seconds slower than the state meet course in Carrolton. There are 4 significant hills, varied terrain (grass and trail), and significant turns that kill speed. The weather was very humid and the temperature was about 88
degrees.

Note: Next two weeks should show what kind of team Wesminster (a long-time powe in Georgia) has, as it will compete against several strong regional teams in Charlotte at Wendy's on Saturday, Oct. 6, then at Great American the following week.
