SCOTTSBORO GIRLS WIN SEVENTH STRAIGHT 5A TITLE,
ST. PAUL’S GILMER LEADS SAINTS TO THIRD STRAIGHT 5A BOYS’ WIN

By ARTHUR L. MACK

OAKVILLE, AL, Saturday November 10—It’s often been said that great teams step up to the challenge when they have to deal with adversity and pressure.
Such was the case in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Cross Country Championships held at the Oakville Indian Mounds Park.

Patrick McGregor’s 15 minute, 38.25 second win in the 6A boys’ race paced Hoover to a big 56-93 win over Vestavia Hills and gave the Bucs momentum going into the Nike Team Nationals Southeast meet on November 24.Smiths Station was third with 118 points, followed by Auburn (121) and Mountain Brook (129) to round out the top five.

In the 6A girls division, Mountain Brook had to deal with the absence of two of its top runners, but had its other runners step up to defeat Hoover 35-71, with Bob Jones third with 93 points, followed by Pelham (188) and Auburn (199).

Mobile’s St. Paul’s, behind Lee Gilmer’s 15:51.38, place four runners in the top seven and easily handled crosstown rival UMS-Wright 44-74 enroute to a third straight 5A boys’ title, with Scottsboro third (81), Spanish Fort fourth (105) and Cullman fifth (137).

On the 5A girls’ side, Scottsboro concluded a season that was filled with injury and internal strife with its seventh straight 5A girls’ crown, outscoring UMS-Wright 31-56. St. Paul’s was third with 72 points, followed by Briarwood Christian (147) and Decatur (170).

In 3A-4A boys, Keith Buell’s 16:49.93 paced Randolph to the team title over Lawrence County 37-67, with Montgomery Academy third (111). Altamont and Rogers rounded out the top five with 161 points apiece. In 3A-4A girls, Lawrence County used youth to edge Rogers 38-43, with Montgomery Academy third with 83 points. Randolph was fourth with 128 and Altamont fifth with 153.

Bayside Academy won its first-ever boys title in any sport as it defeated Cold Springs 51-57 in the 1A-2A boys division, with Athens Bible third with 103 points. Hatton was fourth with 118 points while Catholic-Huntsville was fifth with 157. American Christian won the 1A-2A girls’ title over Bayside Academy 34-54 despite a strong victory by Bayside’s Celeste Sullivan. Cold Springs was third with 90 points, followed by Catholic-Huntsville and Falkville, which had 146 points apiece.

Here is a recap of the meet:

6A
The 6A boys’ title was Hoover’s to win—and the Bucs were not going to let it slip away.
McGregor bided his time and let the front-runners, including Vestavia Hills’ Austin Duckworth, do the work in the first mile. Then, in the second mile, he took command of the race and ran away from the field.
“I had a lot of adrenaline in the race, and I didn’t feel tired at all,” said McGregor after the race. “We went through the first mile in 4:53, and I felt really good. I simply decided to hold back for a little while and then make my move. We’re ready for the Nike Team Nationals.”
Nick Perkins was fourth in 15:54.94, Nick Hayes was 14th in 16:23.53, Justin Rogers was 16th in 16:26.96, and Alec Hamm 22nd overall in 16:34.59 to pace Hoover to the win.
“Pat looked comfortable, and could have ran a lot faster,” said Hoover coach Devon Hind. “Our guys came here to run, and most of them had their best times of the year. They didn’t panic (with the fast pace) and kept doing their job. We couldn’t have asked for anything more. We’re happy to bring home the blue trophy.”

Mountain Brook was all but given the 6A girls’ team title coming into the meet, but Catherine Diethelm injured an ankle a few days before the meet. To make matters even worse, another of the Spartans’ top runners, Madeline Morgan, dropped out at the two-mile mark.
As it turned out, it didn’t matter, as freshman Marie Demedicis stepped up, along with senior Bridgid Carey and junior Leslie Boozer to run the race of their lives to help Mountain Brook breeze past Hoover. Demedicis’ 18:14.80 not only was good for third overall, but it made her the first scorer in the meet. Carey ran 19:01.53 and Boozer 19:04.41 to score fifth and sixth to help solidify the win.
“Our girls really stepped up today,” said Mountain Brook coach Greg Echols. “They got together and realized they had to step up. Bridgid and Leslie have been there, and they know what it takes. Our continuity has been the secret, because we have been able to have kids for five or six years.”
The 6A girls’ race also provided the fastest time of the day. Decatur Austin’s Jennifer Dunn broke away from Huston after the first mile on the way to a blistering 17:44.04. Vestavia Hills’ Elisbeth Denton was a surprising second in 18:07.55, while Huston faded to fourth (18:36.68). Hoover’s Nicole Muldowney rounded out the top five in 18:39.67.

5A

St. Paul’s Lee Gilmer was nervous coming into the 5A boys’ race. After all, his team had won two straight titles, and was favored to win a third. But the Saints faced tough competition, not only from Scottsboro, but also from crosstown rival UMS-Wright, led by John Robert Taylor.
It didn’t matter much, as Gilmer broke away from Taylor after the first mile and won going away in 15:51.18. Taylor and teammate Robert Willett finished 2-3 in 16:18.12 and 16:16 respectively, but St. Paul’s got a 5-6-7 finish from Stuart Graham (16:29.30), Patrick Platzer (16:30.76) and Gilmer’s twin brother John (16:31.85) to clinch the win.
Lee Gilmer said the first mile, ran in 4:53, set the tone for the race.
“We may have went out a bit too fast,” he said. “John Robert was behind me most of the time, and I wanted to try and work on the hills and open the gap. After the two-mile mark, I felt like I was in control of the race. I wasn’t going as fast as I wanted to go, but it’s great to win state.”
“The first mile, we were actually even,” said Taylor. “I backed off a little bit after that. I felt good the whole race, but not like I wanted to.”
St. Paul’s coach Jim Tate said he hoped for a strong showing from his top four runners.
“We wanted to have our top four to be in the top seven positions, and hoped to get good points from out number five runner,” he said. “We wanted to get our good points good and early.”

The 5A girls’ race was bound to be a battle with six-time champion Scottsboro facing a battle not only from archrival St. Paul’s, but also from an emerging UMS-Wright team. But Scottsboro’s Emily Thompson held off St. Paul’s Mary Carleton Johnston to win in 18:17.81. Johnston ran a personal best 18:28.75, and UMS-Wright’s Sarah Gilmore was third in a personal best 18:43.87.
But Scottsboro placed six runners in the top 15 to hold off UMS-Wright—which place four runners in the top 15—to secure its seventh straight title. The win was especially satisfying for coach John Eslinger, whose team battled early season injuries and personality conflicts to come out on top in the meet.
“It’s our first time winning seven straight championships, and we put a little bit of pressure on ourselves this time around because we knew that St. Paul’s would run hard and UMS-Wright has been improving over the season.”
“Scottsboro’s just tough,” said UMS-Wright coach Pat Galle. “But out girls ran well, and we got a great race out of Sarah. Our young runners came up with some personal bests, too.”
Thompson had to hold off a determined bid by Johnston for most of the race. The first mile was really fast—5:36—and Thompson said later that the fast pace scared her.
“It really freaked me out that we were going that fast,” she said. “The plan was to go around 5:50, and I tried to maintain the pace because Mary Carleton’s a really good runner. By the second mile, I was hurting. But we’re so excited about winning a seventh straight championship because that’s all we talked about the night before.”
“Emily ran a great race,” said Johnston. “She ran a strong last mile and I stuck with her as long as I could.”

3A-4A

It was safe to say that the 3A-4A boys and girls’ competition was youth oriented
Randolph’s balance was more than enough to defeat defending champion Lawrence County, as Buell’s 16:49.93 was nine seconds faster than Rogers’ Wes Bevis (16:58.07). Randolph got 7-8-9 finishes from Matt Akenhead (17:23.65), Cameron Conners (17:25.22) and Jonathan Fisher (17:26.59), and a 12th place finish from Leland Collins (17:37.09).
Fisher is only a junior, Buell, Akenhead and Conners are sophomores, and Collins an eighth-grader. That’s sure to be bad news for the rest of the competition.
Lawrence County’s top finisher was Collins Montgomery (fifth, 17:14.29).

In the 3A-4A girls, Lawrence County’s youthful bunch edged Rogers. Led by eighth-grader Ari Stephenson (1st, 19:35.69), Lawrence County placed four runners in the top 10, and coach Steve Johnson said although his team was young, things fell into place at the right time.
“At 1,000 meters, I saw they were in the race, but I never figured they would do as well as they did,” he said. “We never beat Rogers or Montgomery Academy all season, but today our kids made up their minds.”

1A-2A

Cold Springs’ Nathan Lewis did his part, winning the 1A-2A boys’ race in 16:39.70, but it was Fairhope’s Bayside Academy that stole the show with well-positioned runners.
Although Bayside’s highest finisher—Stewart Shoemaker—was only fifth in 17:15.83, juniors Dennis Dowd and William Dorriety were ninth and 10th, eighth-grader Gil Walton was 14th overall and senior John Hammond finished ahead of Cold Springs’ next two finishers to get the win.
“Our guys ran crazy fast,” said Bayside coach Alan Foster. “Our number four and five runners were right in there, and I never doubted we would win.”
In the 1A-2A girls’ division, American Christian Academy had enough firepower to hold off Bayside Academy, despite Bayside Academy’s Celeste Sullivan being the only runner to break 20 minutes as she won in 19:47.80.
But ACA got second and third from Rachael Mills (20:03.94) and Sara Gibson (20:14.16), a fifth from senior Elizabeth Tiller (20:44.82), and ninth from seventh-grader Chandler Dare (21:17.00) to cruise to the team title.

STRONG PERFORMANCES EXPECTED IN ALABAMA
STATE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

By Arthur L. Mack

There are sure to be some fast times this Saturday at the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Cross Country Championships at the Oakville Indian Mounds Park.

Headlining the action in 6A are Mountain Brook’s girls and Hoover’s boys. Mountain Brook, led by Madeline Morgan, freshmen Catherine Diethelm and Marie Demedicis, is the overwhelming favorite to win, thanks to several strong performances during the season. Other teams to watch include Hoover, led by the Muldowney twins, Nicole and Kimberly; Bob Jones, led by Kristina Vaughn; and Auburn, led by Amanda Smith.

Individual runners to watch include Morgan, Sparkman’s Katie Huston and Decatur Austin’s Jennifer Dunn.

On the 6A boys’ side, Hoover, led by Pat McGregor (the winner of last month’s Jesse Owens Invitational in 15:48.19), and Nick Perkins is considered to be the favorite, but watch out for Auburn, led by a pair of juniors, Howard Graves and Patrick Gomez..

Other teams to watch include Oak Mountain, Smiths Station, and Mobile’s McGill-Toolen.

In 5A, St. Paul’s boys hope to make it three in a row as they face off against the likes of Scottsboro, UMS-Wright, and John Carroll.

St. Paul’s first five runners are solid. Led by Lee Gilmer, who was second in last month’s Jesse Owens met with a time of 15:49.88, the Saints took five of the first 10 places in their sectional meet. But they could face a tough battle from Scottsboro, led by Benton Reed, and UMS-Wright, led by John Robert Taylor.

In the 5A girls, Scottsboro hopes to tighten its championship grip against UMS-Wright and St. Paul’s. Scottsboro’s girls, led by Emily Thompson, have been solid for the last six years.

UMS-Wright has the best chance of upsetting Scottsboro. Led by the Gilmore twins, Sarah and Leigh, the Bulldogs have a strong group of young runners who may well pull off a surprise. Don’t count out St. Paul’s, led by Mary Carleton Johnston, who may make things interesting.

It could be a real barn-burner in 3A-4A girls, where Rogers, led by eighth-grader Katie Stewart, Montgomery Academy, led by Maggie Rikard and Sarah Wool and Lawrence County, led by seventh-grader Victoria Draper, are the teams to watch, while in 3A-4A boys, Lawrence County, led by senior Logan Underwood, and Randolph, led by Keith Buell are the expected favorites.

In 1A-2A, expect tight battles in the girls’ division as Cold Springs, led by Palee Myrex and Heaven Watson defends its title against Bayside Academy and American Christian Academy, while Athens Bible, Bayside, and Cold Springs are the teams to watch in the 1A-2A boys.
