Monster meets for Wesh, Taylor
Marlena Wesh's triple paces Landstown girls AAA title; James Taylor scores 36 pts with 2 wins, 2 2nds;
Justin Hunter has incredible meet in the jumps; Western Branch takes AAA boys


Top Overall Highlights
  • Landstown's girls reigned supreme in AAA, scoring 73 to Deep Run's 39.50.  Marlena Wesh tripled the 100 (12.04, -1.4w), 400 (54.30) and 200 (24.20w, +3.5).  She also had prelims of 11.86 100, -1.2w and 24.08 200, +0.0.  They also had a killer hurdles double from Taylor Wheaton (13.98 100H, +0.3w / 41.59 300H) and 13 throws points from Jessica Williams
  • Western Branch outscored Nansemond River for the AAA boys team title, 62-47.  They won the 4x100 (42.21) and were 2nd in the 4x800. Jeffrey Artis won the 100H (14.04, +0.3) and had thirds in the 300H, LJ and TJ
  • Nansemond River sr James Taylor had an incredible meet, starting with tough seconds in the LJ in PR 25-00 (+0.5), and 100 (10.68, +0.0w), then won the 400 and 200 in 47.12 and 21.68w (+2.5w).  He scored 36 total, individually.
  • Ocean Lakes jr Justin Hunter was also amazing in leading his team to 3rd.  He just missed the state record with US#1 (legal) 25-03.75 LJ (+0.0w), edging Taylor, then won the HJ in 6-10 on Friday.  Saturday, he just missed winning the TJ, taking 2nd to David Wilson of George Washington, 49-05.25 to 49-05
  • After a disastrous long jump, T.C. Williams sr Tynita Butts came back to win the AAA HJ with 5-10
  • Western Albemarle sr Tyler Stutzman went for a distance triple in AA, taking the 800 in 1:53.93 and 3200 in 9:10.03, and finishing 3rd in the 1600 (4:15.94), leading his team to the AA state title.  Stutzman's 800 win was by a narrow .01 over Blacksburg's Brian Hencke (1:53.94).  Turner Ashby sr Alex Ott took the 1600 in 4:13.76
  • Blacksburg's girls won AA with the usual distance strength, including a 4x800 win (9:26.27) and a 1-2 by twins Joanna and Kathleen Stevens in the 1600
  • Lancaster jr Andrea White scored a Class A triple, taking the HJ (5-08), TJ (37-10.50 nwi) and LJ (17-05 nwi)
  • Patrick Henry soph Lizzie Powell state record 12-03 PV
  • Stonewall Jackson sr Damien Thigpen was under 37 again in the 300H, winning AAA in 36.76.  He also placed 5th and 3rd in the 100 and 200 after leading prelims in all three.
  • Mountain View sr Thomas Porter took a fast 1600 over Albemarle sr Zach Vrhovac, 4:10.03 to 4:11.14.  Vrhovac also won the 800 in 1:55.16
  • Atlee sr Ben DeJarnette took the AAA 3200 in 9:06.28 over Kellam sr Bobby Peavey 9:09.91 with Porter 3rd
  • Grassfield sr Karimah Shepherd took the LJ with 19-07w (+3.0), then lost a tough battle with Deep Run sr Briana Hudson in the TJ, 40-11.25w (+2.3) to 40-06.75 (+0.9w).
  • Running without normal anchor Anthony Kostelac, who is reportedly out for the season with a stress fracture,b wins the 4x800 anyway, with 7:55.48
  • Bethel's girls took the AAA 4x400 (3:48.86) and 4x100 (47.36)

Team Champs:
  • Class AAA - Western Branch boys 62 over Nansemond River 47; Landstown girls 73 over Deep Run 39.50
  • Class AA - Western Albemarle boys 48 over Brookville 46; Blacksburg girls 52 over Brookville 41
  • Class A - Riverheads boys 56 over Virginia 47; Clarke County girls 60 over James River 39
