NTN Northeast Top Ten Report

Manhattan Dominates the Action

Week ending Oct. 14, 2006

By Tom Cuffe, Northeast Region Editor

Boys - Girls

Boys

1. Collegiate, NY –

The scene on West 78th Street is one of preparation for the Brown Invitational as the Dutchmen train themselves for their next major test at Goddard Park. He ride up I 95 into Rhode Island should be very interesting for NYC squad as they look to defend their lofty ranking. With an ear to ground and the nose to grind stone: are they healthy? Only time will tell – damn that rumor mill!

2. Coatsville, PA –

After a huge win over rival Henderson at the Steel City Invitational the Coatevillites will be training and getting ready for local championship meets. Their next “steel cage match” with be with fellow Keystoners as they stay the course and stay in state for competition.

In the athletic sense and more specifically in the cross-country sense we can now mark time by the 34th Annual MCXI (Manhattan College XC Invite, for the masses). Simply put – WOW! There are not enough superlatives to describe the true greatness of the day. Race after race teams and individuals put it on the line for the honor and the glory of being the preeminent performer of the “biggest and the best” cross-country invitational in the nation. The Big Apple served as the backdrop to one outstanding gig after another – it was gig-a-lious!!!

3. Shenendehowa, NY v. #5 Danbury, CT

Saturday, 10.14.06 @ 2:04 PM. The Edward O’Toole Boys “E” Race WAS the best race of the day! The Plainsmen “got it done” led by “the Doc” ripping thru the finish line with a new course record of 12:15.5 only problem is Craig Forys of Colts Neck beat him to the line in 12:10.7 to set a NEW COURSE RECORD AT VANNY (only to be bettered 23 minutes later by Tommy Gruenewald of FM with a 12:10.6). Coach Jones had his guys ready on the day and they took home the MCXI watches for fastest team of the day with an average of 12:56.6 – one of the fastest EVER recorded in the history of the legendary 2.5 mile course! The Hatters of Coach Rob Murray proved that they are simply one of the elite teams in the nation by placing second to Shen 65-85 in a wonderful race. Shen’s fifth man in at 13:16 is pretty tough indeed!

4. Fayetteville Manlius, NY v. THE FIELD

FM won their division handily over a very good Ridgewood, NJ team (something about Maroon Cats?) by a score of 55 to 96. Tommy G needed no G Tones to get it done. He simply inflicted as much pain on himself as he could and raced to – yes – A NEW COURSE RECORD by “smashing” Forys new 23 minute old record record by all of one tenth of a second… as in .1 – yes an entire tenth over 2.5 miles. Can you say co-record holders, only my humble opinion ladies & gentleman! TG has a nice back-up in Geoff King but the gap to their #5 man is currently wide enough to drive a semi-truck thru. We shall see, shant we.

5. Warwick Valley, NY v. #10 Liverpool, NY –

“G” race: The Warwick Purple Wave closed the door 67 to 83 over a tough group of Liverpudlians clad in orange. The team was paced by third place finisher Terrence Prial in a very swift 12:39.4. The WV brain trust of Saint & Potter have huge depth as they also swept one of the JV races in impressive style. The dynamic duo of H&H went 12:46.9 & 13:05.0 respectfully with Heenen 6th and Hickey 8th a very strong 1-2 punch indeed. WV fifth man comes in at 13:30 and LP at 13:36.

Previously ranked Shaker, NY v. #8 Chaminade, NY

Shaker over Chaminade 61-71 in a battle of two very closely matched teams. The “A” race brings together some fire-power to start the day. Flyer Steeplechase All-American Ryan Mc Dermott takes the crown in 12:33.0 over a quality 1-2 Bison punch of Matt Bogdan 12:42.7 and R.J. Sniffen 12:46.2 – they will be mad dangerous (yikes) as the championship season approaches as will the Flyers! By the way still awaiting my quote from the bridge trio of Donnelly, Tonn and Schiek!!!

aka

The Shootout at Vanny!

Six national powers, count ‘em five: four from NYS, one from NJ and one coming down from new Enland. Throw in an outstanding Virginia squad by the name of Midlothian and huge track powerhouse Eleanor Roosevelt out of Maryland and for good measure add in the best team in all of Delaware in Tatnall and what do you get? One of the best female races in these parts possibly EVER! Believe me now that’s saying a lot, yes certainly a lot with all the quality teams in this here neck of the woods.

When the dust settled on this beautiful and glorious day for cross-country running and racing we had a new Queen in town! In what added up to a xc slugfest the ladies of Midlothian out ran and out scored a quality field, a deep field an historic field. When they come to writing about the Midlothian win it will be noted that they did it the old fashioned way with “pack running” and no top individual scorer – rather refreshing actually!

Here’s how it broke down:
