Boys Varsity E Report - by Matt Soja

Germantown Friends from Philadelphia continued their great season, defeating the Canadian team from Thousand Islands, Ontario 71-86 to take the E division title. Brentsville VA, ranked #4 in the Southeast, finished third with 102 points.

The Pennsylvania harriers, ranked third in the Northeast, proved that their Paul Short triumph two weeks ago was no fluke. Although they averaged only 13:10.5, which means they will slip in the rankings behind North Penn and probably Don Bosco, their margin of victory over Brentsville was quite impressive. GF is a very top-heavy team, led by its superstar, Max Kaulbach, who won the race in 12:28.0, one of the best times of the day. Jake McKenzie followed soon after in fifth in 12:53.7 and the rest of the Friends finished in mid-13 range.

Kaulbach, who has earned an honorable mention in Dyestat’s last Top 25 national list, triumphed by a solid margin of 11 seconds over another accomplished Pennsylvanian, Chris Aldrich of Henderson PA. He said that Aldrich and Dylan Trotzulc of Collegiate (third in 12:47.5) led for most of the race until he took over the lead on the last mile and pulled away decisively. But he also added that the team victory was more important to him than the individual glory. This was the only varsity boys’ race where the individual winner also contributed to his team’s victory.
