Boys Results - Girls Results - Results Link - NJSIAA - Matt Soja's Report - Ed Grant's Report

Highlights
  • Led by individual champ Melanie Thompson, Voorhees again reset the Holmdel record, averaging 19:01 and rolling to victory with 60 points, 62 ahead of runner-up Roxbury
  • Thompson, a junior, caught and passed Southern Regional jr Jillian Smith in the last half-mile, then held her off down the final stretch, 18:02-18:03. Kingsway soph Chelsea Ley was 3rd in 18:08 and Oak Knoll sr Kathleen McCafferty, who had the fastest time in the Groups last week, was 4th in 18:28.
  • The big Brian Leung - Doug Smith showdown fizzled as Smith did not finish. But Leung, the West Windsor Plainsboro South sr was at his best, powering to a 15:33 victory. Brick Memorial sr Andrew Brodeur was runner-up in 15:51.
  • Don Bosco packed everyone in the top 22 (team scoring) and had a :35 second 1-5 spread to crush the boys field with 69 points. CBA won a close battle for 2nd with 150 points.

Matt Soja's Report - Commanding victories on all sides

It was a very chilly morning at Holmdel Park Saturday, but great expectations of scorching duels for both genders in another exciting Meet of Champions, the icing on the cake of the Garden State season, warmed the hearts of New Jersey cross country aficionados.  And the best harriers in the state did not disappoint them, producing a new all-time team course record and the fastest 1-2-3 finish in meet history on the girls’ side, and commanding victories by both team and individual champions for the boys, giving them great hopes ahead for the NTN and Foot Locker competitions commencing next weekend.

The Voorhees girls, who have been in the second spot in the Northeast rankings, improved on their spectacular group meet victory last week, running even faster today.  Thanks to Melanie Thompson’s individual victory in 18:02, and with Katrina Spratford and Katie Petruzzellis also dipping well under 19 minutes, the Hunterdon County team buried the competition, scoring only 60 points and winning over Roxbury by 62.  All of their top five were in top 60 individually, resulting in a 19:01.0 team average, breaking their own Holmdel course record from last week by three seconds.  They just missed their goal of being the first team in state history to break the 19-minute mark on New Jersey’s premier course, but nonetheless their dominating performance sent a strong message to Hanover NH ahead of next Saturday’s Nike Team Regionals at Bowdoin Park.

Top-heavy Roxbury grabbed the silver with 122 points, as it was the only other team with three individual runners in top 16 overall.  Ridge edged out Immaculate Heart, which rebounded very well from a subpar group race last week, to take the bronze on sixth-runner tiebreaker with both teams scoring 137 points.  Defending champions Colts Neck finished only 11th as their star Briana Jackucewicz did not toe the line because of a calf injury.  She is most likely done for the season.

It was double pleasure for Thompson, as she also stunned the favored Jillian Smith of Southern Regional, outkicking her down the last straightaway to take the individual crown as well.  Smith, who last spring won the state 800m crown with a speedy 2:08.80, was expected to sit on other favorites through the race and outkick them on the last mile, but she did the opposite, forcing the pace throughout.  It allowed her to break everyone but Thompson and Kingsway’s Chelsea Ley.  But it was the Voorhees junior who had the most left in the tank as they blazed down the grassy hill for the last 250m of the race.  Thompson won in 18:02, one second ahead of Smith and six ahead of Ley.  Those were the eighth, ninth, and tenth fastest performers in Holmdel Park history, and also the fastest and closest combined 1-2-3 finish in meet history.  Amazingly, all three are underclassmen, so hopefully they will have an even more spectacular rematch at next years meet.

Overall, this was probably the deepest girls meet in history.  With twelve runners dipping under 18:50 on the hilly layout and another eight under 19:10, we can talk about the golden age for girls cross country in New Jersey. Hopefully the successful streak will be continued next weekend by Voorhees at Bowdoin (NTN Northeast Regional) and by individual stars led by Smith at Van Cortlandt Park (Foot Locker Northeast).

The boys’ meet did not have as many historical performances, and the anticipated dramatic close matchups did not materialize, but both the team and individual champions put on quite a show. Don Bosco Prep was the slight favorite going into the meet by the virtue of having run the fastest team average at groups, but at least four or five other teams were expected to give them a major run for their money.  It did not happen.  The Ironmen, ranked #4 in the Northeast, absolutely and positively destroyed the field, winning 69-150 over parochial rivals Christian Brothers, whom they edged by only 16 points in the group meet the previous weekend.

Their leader, Rob Molke, ran much better than last week, finishing 8th in 16:08 and leading his team to first state crown since 1992.  Their amazing 81-point margin of victory was the largest for boys Meet of Champions since 1985.  They put five runners ahead of runner-up Christian Brothers’ first finisher, which has probably never happened before in meet history.  With a 16:25.8 average and merely a 35-second spread, they might have a great chance of challenging for an automatic qualifying spot at Bowdoin.

Behind the two parochial schools, the small South Jersey school Haddonfield captured third with 159, just ahead of Millburn with 164.  Last year’s champions Jackson Memorial took sixth while Morris Hills ended up only 12th in the stacked field.

Individually, it was supposed to be a duel between Brian Leung of West Windsor Plainsboro South and Doug Smith of Gill St. Bernards, two runners who had been undefeated this year.  But the duel lasted for only a few minutes, as Smith fell off Leung’s pace after the first mile and dropped out of the race with dizziness symptoms at the halfway mark in the bowl.  Unchallenged, Leung flew all alone to the finish, crossing the line in 15:33, the fifth best time in Holmdel history.  He won by an impressive 18-second margin over Brick Memorial’s Andrew Brodeur with Monsignor Donovan Ray Coles the only other runner under 16 minutes.

Leung will now focus on Footlocker Regionals at VCP next weekend, where he will hopefully be joined by a healthy Smith and Brandon Jarrett, who is recovering from groin injury he sustained last month at Manhattan Invitational.

Ed Grant's Report - Thompson Ready to Focus on Running Now

Melanie Thompson of Voorhees announced that she has hung up her basketball shoes after scoring a stunning upset of Jillian Smith of Southern Ocean Regional in the New Jersey all-group cross-country championships on Saturday at Holmdel County Park.

It was not so much that Thompson won the race as the way she did it, outkicking Smith, a 56-second 400-meter relay runner, in the final drive to the finish line after coming out of the woods.  Pre-race speculations had Smith a sure winner if she was close to any of her rivals in that final 200 meters, but Thompson—who had run third for much of the race behind Smith and third-place finisher Chelsea Ley of Kingaway—shattered that theory.

All three girls finished the hilly 5K layout under 18:10, taking the 8th, 9th and 10th places on the all-time Holmdel list, which is still headed by the 17:35.5 run by 1983 national Champion Janet Smith of North Edison.  Thompson clocked 18:02, Smith 18:03 and Ley 18:08.  And they will do it all over again next year since the first two are juniors and Ley only a sophomore. (Smith holds that class record with her 1981 all-group victory at 18:01.5.)

Thompson, who has been a starter with the Voorhees basketball team as a freshman and sophomore, will now devote herself exclusively to what looks like a very promising running career.  She led her team to its first all-group title, 60-122, over Roxbury, as well as a new team average mark of 19:01.  This coming weekend, she will skip individual efforts at the Northeast Foot Locker Trials to lead the Vikings in the national team qualifying meet at New York’s Bowdoin Park where Voorhees won a preliminary meet in September.

This will leave Smith to head the New Jersey entry at Van Cortlandt Park with Ley and fourth-place Katie McCafferty of Oak Knoll following.  The New Jersey crew will be a strong one overall as most of the other girls who finished at 18:50 or below should also be present.

Just as the Manhattan Invitational battle between Doug Smith of Gill St. Bernard’s and Brandon Jarrett of St. Benedict’s had fizzled last month, when Jarrett dropped out at the mile mark, so did Smith’s meeting with Manhattan leader Brian Leung of West Windsor-Plainsboro South bomb out.  Doug cut off his race in the bowl after running with Leung for the first half of the race. (Jarrett, of course, was not on hand since St. Benedict’s is only an affiliate member of the state association.)

Leung was thus an easy winner over Andrew Brodeur of Brick Memorial in 15:33, his fastest of three wins at Holmdel this year and fifth best in course history, right behind 1991 national champ Brendan Heffernan of North Hunterdon.  Third in this race was a real surprise: Ryan Coles of Msgr. Donovan, who had finished in that same position a week earlier in the Parochial A meet.

With Smith a very doubtful starter this weekend, it will be up to Leung and Jarrett to carry the Garden State banner at the Footlocker Trials.  They last met at this meet a year ago with Jarrett placing eighth to qualify for the Nationals (there he placed 12th) and Leung 36th.  Needless to say it should be a lot closer this time with the definite possibility of a 1-2 finish.  Aside from Jarrett’s mishap at the Manhattan meet, both are undefeated this season.

Don Bosco will join Voorhees at the team trials after scoring a smashing 69-150 defeat of Christian Brothers in the all-group boys’ race.  The Ironmen, who last won this one in 1992, had the 11th best all-time performance at Holmdel with a 16:25.8 average, led by junior Bob Molke in 8th place at 16:08.  The victory concluded an undefeated campaign for the Don Bosco varsity—its only “loss” coming in the New Jersey Catholic Track Conference meet where it held out its top seven.

The very young Haddonfield team was a close third in this one, with three sophomores and a freshman in its top five.  It may have to wait another year to take over the top position, however, as four of Don Bosco’s top six return, two of them also sophs – Rafael Vargas, who was the fifth man over for the Ironmen in 16:42, and Howard Rosas, who finished in 17:01.

Voorhees has just three of its top five returning and a big gap to its other runners.  Roxbury loses its top pair of Laure Penney and Ashley Cromartie, but could get a boost if Ariann Neutts decides to return after playing soccer this fall.  The team to watch, however, may be Toms River North which finished fifth with four freshmen and a junior in its lineup.

Even with Smith dropping out, there was an unusual number of underclassmen in the top ranks of the boys’ race, led by juniors Robby Andrews of Manalapan and Brett Johnson of Ocean City, who finished 4-5.  Molke was the third junior in the top 10 and Jon Vitez of Haddonfield led the sophs in 12th at 16:12.  Freshman Joseph Rosa of West Windsor-Plainsboro North continued his fine season, placing 16th in 16:18, while his twin, James, who has been battling Lyme disease all season, ran 17:17.
