DyeStat XC Region Review NE

Summary of Northeast Top Ten, Week Ending Sept. 8, 2007

By Matt Soja, Dyestat NE Regional Editor

Boys - Girls

The 2007 cross country season is slowly, but surely getting under way in the Northeast. Because of the different association rules in the various states, not everyone is at the same stage of the racing season. While Pennsylvania already held many meets in August, others like Connecticut are not even allowed to hold any official meets until September 11. Even where the season has already begun, many top teams are skipping the earliest racing opportunities, opting instead to extend their intensive training well into the new school year.

There were several well-attended invitationals this weekend, mostly in Pennsylvania, but also at the other end of the region in New Hampshire where Hanover girls dominated the Mount Washington Great Glen Invitational. Besides them and the Pennsylvania teams, however, almost none of the regional big-hitters were in action, so the regional rankings will not change much until next week.

BOYS

1. DANBURY, CT

2. GLASTONBURY, CT
Both Connecticut teams are not allowed to race until Tuesday, September 11 when they will begin their dual meet program.

3. NORTH ALLEGHENY, PA
In their first major outing, they easily won the A division at the Red, White, and Blue Invitational this Saturday, putting their entire top five under 17 minutes.

2 Matt Jacob 16:10
5 Dan O'Brien 16:16
14 Will Appman 16:40
16 Patrick Morgan 16:45
21 Eric Balaban 16:56
34 Jake Holdcroft 17:12
37 Chase Broussard 17:14

4. GERMANTOWN FRIENDS, PA
They won an unusual contest – a 4 x 2 mile cross-country relay, clocking a 43:40.5. It’s hard to draw conclusions from such a performance, especially without individual splits, but defeating some of the best teams in the state, such as Henderson and Upper Dublin, shows they are in a good position at the beginning of the season.

5. BROOKLINE, MA
Like the CT teams, they will open on Sept. 11th with a dual meet.

6. MERRIMACK, NH
Won the team title at the Saber Relays this weekend, over Nashua South and Con-Val. Results not available.

7. JACKSON, NJ
Starts with a dual meet this week

8. CON-VAL, NH
Third in the already mentioned team competition at Saber Relays. No full results from the meet available yet.

9. DON BOSCO, NJ
Starts with a dual meet on Sept. 11

10. CHRISTIAN BROTHERS, NJ

Starts with a dual meet this week

GIRLS

1. COLTS NECK, NJ
Idle this weekend, starts with a dual meet against Middletown South and Marlboro on Sept. 11. Their first invitational is the Delaware Military Academy Cross Country Invite on Sept. 20

2. HANOVER, NH
The New England champions did not disappoint by crushing the competition at the Great Glen Invitational. They scored 23 points in the Medium schools division with Georgia Griffin smashing the course record with her 18:32, followed by five of her teammates finishing in a pack between 20:23 and 20:58. The impressive depth should give them the tools to challenge Colts Neck in an epic battle at the NTN Regionals.

1 Georgia Griffin 18:32
5 Bridgette Black 20:23
6 Heidi Caldwell 20:28
7 Beth Taylor 20:33
8 Cate Brown 20:41
9 Grace Rodriguez 20:58
12 Meg Donohue 21:08

3. BROMFIELD, MA
Apparently idle this weekend

4. EMMAUS, PA
On Sept. 1 they nearly swept the Maroon and Gold Classic at Kutztown University, scoring 17 points. Their top four came in a pack, spreading between 19:51 and 20:03, with the fifth girl a minute behind. This one-minute gap could prove problematic in major meets, however.

1 Graybill, Lindsey 19:50.11
2 Faust, Amanda 19:51.66
3 Faust, Christina,19:58.90
4 Faust, Brianna 20:02.83
7 Meade, Melissa 21:02.01
10 Coates, Kelsey 21:23.31
17 Leonard, Kelsey 22:14.82

5. LASALLE, RI
While their third best girl, Nicole Cocozza, has to sit out until October after transferring from Cranston West, her teammates took second at the Injury Fund Cross Country Carnival. Although they have a terrific 1-2 punch in Jeanne Mack and Jean Christensen, the best two runners in the state, the one-point loss to Coventry proved they need Cocozza back as soon as possible to fill the gap behind the two stars.

1 Jeanne Mack 19:13.00
2 Jean Christensen 19:35.00
11 Cassandra Pederzani 21:09.00
15 Meghan Pinksaw 21:46.00
16 Morgan Finnegan 21:47.00
17 Liana Pereira 21:49.00
22 Shannon Gorman 22:36.00

6. MONSIGNOR DONOVAN, NJ
They had a good start at the Knights Invitational class meet held over a 2-mile course. They recorded six of the best 12 times of the day in the combined results. Freshman Dabrowski should be a great addition to the well-experienced squad.

Krissa Loretto 11:55.20
Molly Kempton 12:11.10
Devin Solvik 12:25.10
Briana Crowe 12:28.20
Pauline Dabrowski 12:45.00
Meagen Brosnan 12:47.00

No major races yet.

8. RED BANK CATHOLIC, NJ
Open with a dual week this week.

9. DENNIS-YARMOUTH, MA
No major meets so far.

10. NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI

They almost swept the Division 1 race at Injury Fund, scoring 16 points. With a solid pack under 21 minutes, they could challenge LaSalle for the Rhode Island supremacy even when they return to full strength.

1 Alexa Mazur 20:27.60
2 Erin Brennan 20:40.00
3 Allison Stasiuk 20:44.00
4 Kathryn Lynch 20:51.00
