Comet Relays Southern star Jillian Smith injures hip, status for Penn Relays questionable; Southern still wins girls title while Trenton takes boys crown in Large School Division Saturday, April 11, 2009 - Hackensack, NJ Results - Boys Girls Highlights Smith , who anchored her team to the 4x800-meter and distance medley relay titles at the Nike Indoor Nationals last month in Boston, suffered a hip flexor injury while running the 4x1,600 relay. Smith went through the 800 mark in 2:21 before walking off the track. Th ere is certainly some doubt about whether Jill will be able to run at Penn,'' said Zatorski, who said the hip has been nagging his star runner off and on since the Nike Indoor Nationals a month ago. ``We don't know the severity of the injury right now, so I don't want to speculate, but Jill won't run at Penn unless she's 100 percent healthy. If it weren't for the Penn Relays, I'd shut her down right now for two weeks. We'll wait and see how she is in a day or two and evaluate things.''
Despite's Smith's injury Southern was still able to edge Immaculate Heart Academy, 80-79 , for the girls Large School title. Columbia was third with 73.
The highlight of the girls' met was the Bergen County record tying time of 48.6 run by Paramus Catholic to edge Columbia (48.9) in the 400 relay .Paramus Catholic matched the record of 48.6 set in 1980 by Teaneck and equaled by Queen of Peace in 2002.
A week after its heartbreaking ½ point loss at the Kearny Relays, Trenton racked up 108 points on the strength of victories in the long jump and triple jump and the javelin to steamroll its way to the boys’ Large Schools championship. Columbia was second with 66.
senior star Rolston Braithwaite led the way for the Tornadoes, soaring 44-0 in the triple jump and the 20-7 to key those victories
The Old Tappan boys and Holy Angels girls captured the Small Schools team titles.
