New US #1's in the Championship DMR's are the highlight of Day 1

Without much hype every year the distance medley relays at the Yale Invitational bring together a number of top teams all looking for Penn Relays and National Championship qualifying marks and most times the end result is a new national leader. That was the case once again as Burnt Hills (NY) girls and Westerly (RI) boys each came from behind to claim the top spot in the nation in winning the Championship Distance Medley Relay at the Yale Invitational in New Haven - Full Champ DMR report

Springer returns for another US #1, Roecker gets 2nd win in Day 2

Sam Roecker (Burnt Hills, NY) and Andrew Springer (Westerly, RI) walked away from Yale University’s Cox Cage track facility having just anchored their distance medley relays teams to victory and US #1’s.  They would return to the track the next morning to once again record wins and for Springer another US #1 and a US #2 for Roecker - Full day 2 report

PREVIEW

The mile and the distance medley relay are two featured events through the first half of the Northeast indoor track season, each with the possibility of leading to a chance on a big stage.  For milers it is a chance to qualify for the Millrose Games and for the relay teams, a chance to post a time that will qualify them for the Penn Relays in the spring.  Once again these two events will be the focus of these weekends action at the 27th Yale Invitational in New Haven, Connecticut.   While there will be other chances this year to make it to the huge relay carnival in the spring, this is the final chance for an athlete to post a time that will gain them entry onto the starting line at Madison Square garden in two weeks.

Friday’s events at the Cox Cage facility will mostly be class relays, but just before 8:00pm the Championship DMR’s will take center stage.  Featured in the girls race will be many of the best that the Northeast has to offer including:

North Shore (NY) – The national leaders have a very powerful leadoff and anchor legs that make them a threat to win any race.
Glastonbury (CT) – The Connecticut state cross country champs will be looking to defend the home turf
Saratoga Springs (NY) – They may not have the home run hitter on the anchor that they have had for many years, but the New York school is very well rounded and able to exploit any other teams weak legs
Burnt Hills (NY) – Another upstate New York team that really does not have a weakness and will without a doubt be in the running from the opening gun.
Tatnall School (DE) – The many time Delaware state champs travel north to once again take on the best the Northeast has to offer.

The boy’s race is just as deep in talent and the end results could be a new US leader.
Leading the field will be national leader Shenendehowa (NY).  Shen may be the most rounded teams in the field, but schools like Danbury (CT), Port Washington (NY) and Westerly (RI) all have big anchor legs who could make the race come down to the final laps.

On Saturday all attention turns to the individual events highlighted by the invitational miles.  Among the athletes who are sure to shine in the events leading up to the mile races include:
Catherine Milledge (Weaver, CT) – Milledge was the Overall MVP at the Hartford Invite based in her 55 and Hurdle double win.
Madalayne Smith (Saratoga, NY) – the New York hurdle champ
Duandre Barnaby (Weaver, CT) – Will be looking to add the 400 title at Yale to his Hartford 300 crown

The two distance races on Saturday will be the meets star packed individual events.  The 3000 will see Molly Pezzulo (Burnt Hills, NY) looking to regain the national lead and be the first runner under 10:00 this season.  Challenging Pezzulo will be Samantha Nadel (North Shore, NY),  Cassie Goutos (Saratoga, NY), Connecticut cross country champ Kristen Malloy (Glastonbury) and Meaghan Gregory (Burnt Hills, NY).  One of the biggest questions will be how do many of the runners in the race bounce back from the distance relay the night before.

The two mile races could challenge the national lead and earn a number of athletes an invitation to the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden in two weeks.  The girls race will feature Shenendehowa freshman sensation Lizzie Predmore, Tatnall’s Juliet Bottorff, Sam Roecker (Burnt Hills, NY) and the 3000 meter national leader Brianna Welch (North Shore, NY).   Not to be overlooked is Anna Shields (Lewis Mills, CT) who does not have the burden of coming back of the relay the night before.  The boys race is without a doubt the best field of the meet.  Among the contenders will be current US #1 Omar Abdi (Charlestown, Ma), former #1 Joey Bubniak (Danbury, Ct), current 1000 meter #1 Mark Feigen (East Greenwich, RI), 3000 meter national leader Andrew Springer (Westerly, RI) and NY cross country champ Alex Leuchanka (Shenendehowa, NY).  A fast time could be in the cards in the 2nd heat as well where 600 meter national leader Cas Loxsom (Wilbur Cross, CT),  Ahmed Ali (Charlestown, Ma) and Dan Harris (Shenendehowa) go at it.
