Race Report by John Nepolitan
Championship, but for The Suburban Council League of the Albany, NY area year in and year out is arguably one of the strongest in the nation. It is common that each year there are teams and runners who are not only in contention for State honors, but national honors as well. The 2008 season is no different as there are 4 teams that are in the top 25 of the USA, 3 girl’s teams and 1 boy’s. Even with these teams looking to perform on the bigger state and national stage, the teams still want local bragging rights which means taking a League title.
Boys Varsity – There is no doubt that Shenendehowa is the #1 team in the Suburban Council as they are ranked #1 in the state, but that did not mean Burnt Hills would roll over and just give up the team crown without a fight. From the gun the intention of Burnt Hills was clear, get out hard and take it to the states #1 team. Burnt Hills teammates Otis Ubriaco and Scott Maughan jumped to an early lead, and as late as the 2 mile point Ubriaco had the lead with Maughan in 3rd. Starting to move in the final mile, the Shen runners began picking up places. Entering the last mile Ubriaco held a 20 meter lead over Shen’s Alex Leuchanka, a late summer transfer from Warwick Valley. Even though Leuchanka was moving hard, Ubriaco still looked smooth and under control. Behind the first two, the teams were almost even on score with a slight edge going to Shenendehowa based on their depth.
Coming from the woods for the final 350 meters Ubriaco was still holding onto a lead, but Leuchanka now with the finish line in sight started to pump hard and put together a long drive for the finish. Ubriaco was not tightening up, but Leuchanka was turning over at a much fast pace, "I found the extra gear right near the finish, I just wanted it so bad.” Said the winner. With just 100 meters to go the two were side by side, but Ubriaco had no reply for Leuchanka’s kick. Leuchanka would power through the finish to stop the clock with a time of 15:04.20, sixth-best ever on the 3.04-mile course. Ubriaco's time of 15:08.59 is the eighth-best time ever.
Just as the individual race was tight, the team battle was just as close. Through 4 finishers Shenendehowa held a 1 point lead 20-21. Jamie Glover’s 11th place finish would seal the win for the states #1 team. The two teams are sure to meet again this season at the Federation and NXN Regional the next year Shenendehowa and Alex Leuchanka have Capitol District bragging rights.
Girls Varsity – The final race of the day would be the one that fans had come to see, the battle between 3 nationally ranked teams. Burnt Hills , ranked #11 in the USA entered the meet with a slight edge over USA #13 Saratoga and USA #21 Shenendehowa. Just like the three teams were evenly matched the individual title was also up for grabs as at least 4 runners had credentials that could put them as the favorites role.
At the first turn 350 meters into the race there was no question that Saratoga and Shenendehowa were not just going to roll over and give Burnt Hills the title.
Over the course of the first 2 miles Shenendehowa’s Lizzie Predmore, just a 9th grader, built up a 16 second lead over the Burnt Hills duo of Sam Roecker and Molly Pezzulo. By the time Premore came into the final 350 meter finishing straight that lead would almost double, eventually finishing in 16:58.09 the #4 time in course history. Behind Predmore Roecker and Pezzulo worked together to protect the 2nd and 3rd positions.
Passing 2 miles Saratoga’s Brianne Bellon was holding onto 4th place, but behind her Burnt Hills Meaghan Gregory was picking her way through the pack and closing in. Over the last mile Gregory would pass Bellon to grab 4th, an important move in the team battle.
After each team had 4 runners over the line Burnt Hills held a 22 – 30 lead and looked like a lock to claim the team trophy. As runners began to stream over the finish line, 16 of the top 17 were from one of the 3 nationally ranked teams, all eyes were looking for Burnt Hills final scorer. Saratoga’s 5th runner had crossed the line in 11th, ahead of Burnt Hills 4th. When Riley Wilk, crossed in 15th it would be enough for the 37 – 41 – 50 win over Saratoga and Shenendehowa.

Most of the nation will start the slow building process through the championship season with easy runs through league and county races before the heat gets turned up in regional and then state races. New York’s Suburban Council League Championships just north of the state capitol Albany is not like most of the nation. When teams line up for the starters gun Saturday the two championship races will have regional and national significance. In the 12 team league are 5 nationally ranked teams all shooting for places in the NXN Championships and this first weekend of championships could help or hurt their chances of getting to the Portland starting line.
