NY's Hickey and NJ's Spencer both to run for New York schools in 2008

As 2008 comes to a close, two of the Metro areas top cross country runners, have announced plans on where they will be going to school in 2008.  Mike Hickey (Pearl River, NY) will be headed to Iona  and Leighton Spencer (Don Bosco Prep, NJ) will be also be staying local having been accepted to Columbia.

Hickey (photo left by John Nepolitan) who placed 3rd in the New York State Class “B” race and 2nd in the Manhattan “D” race in a swift 12;35 will be joining a program that has reached the awards podium at the NCAA Championships including a 2008 runner-up finish.  For Hickey the choice was an easy one, “I liked the whole team atmosphere that exists over there, that plus how close it is to home were major reasons for me going there.  I also like the small school mentality, and the whole atmosphere surrounding the school made it feel like the perfect fit for me.”

Spencer(photo right by John Nepolitan), who received 1st team all state honors, placed 2nd at the NXN Northeast regional leading his Bosco team back to the national meet for the 2nd time where they placed 6th.  The choice for Spencer also seemed to be an easy one, “I choose Columbia University because I knew how the coaches would help me develop as a runner. They would be willing to take time with each individual and meet their needs. I could tell that these men care about not only the team as a whole but each individual on that team. I felt completely at home while on Columbia's campus. The environment had a huge part to do with my decision. Columbia being located in the heart of New York City only helped my decision. I also choose Columbia University because it is an Ivy League institution and can provide me with a meaningful degree and open doors in the future. From the first time I visited Columbia...I knew it was the school for me.”
