2009 Outdoor Season

US#1 Special: The rest of the year in records
  • What will they do for an encore?  There have been seven USRs set so far this spring.  Who is most likely to produce an encore performance?
    • Anna Jelmini CA, discus - No one, except Mason Finley in the discus, is more likely to hold on to her US#1s for the rest of the season than she is in the shot and the discus.  But the biggest question is not improving the DT mark, but whether or not she can get that extra 6-plus inches in the shot to grasp hold of both national records.  She'll have more chances and the chances are good.
    • Curtis Beach NM decathlon - Curtis will take his last shot at the decathlon with high school implements at Great Southwest.  If conditions are good and he's healthy, you can take a new mark to the bank.
    • Albemarle VA boys 4x800 - The stage is set for yet another showdown between Albemarle and Morris Hills NJ in the 4x800 at Nike Outdoor.  Can lightning strike three times?  After all, Albemarle did it indoors, too.  But the boys proclaimed that they were just starting to get in shape at Penn, so we'll see.  Don't sleep on Morris Hills, either.  They've gotten closer every time they've raced Albemarle.
    • Shelby Greany NY steeple - Word on the street is that Shelby is just running the 5k at NON, but chances are good she'll give her mark another good run at the NY state meet.  The kind of year she's having, don't bet against her
    • New Bern NC boys, sprint medley relay - While New Bern may go for the SMR again at NON, the focus right now is clearly on Great Southwest, where they are planning to chase the 4x400 mark against an all-star team led by Tavaris Tate.  It should be one of the highlights of the year, but there's a reason Hawthorne's 3:07.40 has stood for 24 years and that no one has even come within 2 full seconds of it since 1997:  That's because it's really, REALLY, good.
    • Mason Finley CO, discus- His might be the toughest record to surpass as the Coloradoan has shown himself to be a consistent performer in the 220s.  It usually takes great conditions (wind, maybe altitude) for career-making marks like that 236-06
    • Toni Young OK, high jump - This is the toughest call, as Young was a consistent 5-10, 5-11 type until the record.  Since then, she hasn't broken 6 feet again.  At state she went just 5-06.  She's said to be playing traveling hoops (basketball is her main sport) now, but possibly jumping at NON
  • Who else will set national records?  These are the athletes who have the best chance to add to the list this spring
    • Conor McCullough CA, hammer - He's been relatively quiet since indoors, but the season is just beginning for Conor.  He's got the record at 260-00 and threw 256-09 early in the year.  Bet the bank on this one.
    • Lauren Chambers GA, hammer - It's a no-brainer; she's only an inch away.  After hitting a plateau mid-season, Lauren seems like she's peaking again.  The indoor weight record eluded her; the hammer mark won't.
    • Reggie Wyatt CA, 300H (and 400H) - Wyatt has knocked at the door with 36.01, 35.71, and 35.74 marks.  He still has an agonizing half second to go for Jeshua Anderson's 300H mark, but it seems only a matter of time.  The 49.38 400H record will be tougher and attempts will have to wait another month or so
    • Jack Whitt OK, pole vault - In April, Whitt had the high point of an incredible year of 17-foot-plus jumps, when he went 18-00.25 at Texas Relays.  He has just 2.75 inches to go to reach Tommy Skipper and a full post-season to go
    • Jordan Hasay CA, 1500 or 3200 - Of course, Jordan already has the 1500 mark.  With two 4:16s under her belt this spring, there's a solid chance that by next month, she'll be ready to assault that 4:14.50 again.  As for the 3200, she has less than four seconds to go from the 9:52.13 she ran last spring to the 9:48.59 of Kim Mortensen.  Laurynne
Chetelat pushed her every step in that CA state meet;  Alex Dunne has the best chance of doing that June 5
    • Elijah Greer OR, 800 - After a modest start to the year, Greer has proven he's back in at least 1:48 shape.  One senses it will take the perfect storm to get that extra second-plus to get to 1:46.45, Michael Granville's mark.  Of course, Robbie Andrews NJ can't be counted out in that discussion, since he broke Granville's indoor mark, but he hasn't made a big 800 effort outdoors yet.  Both are still holding their cards close regarding the post-season and what they'll run
    • "Take your pick" boys 4x1 mile - This is going out on a limb, but all of the boys distance relays are shaping up to be spectacular at NON.  You know the 4x800 record will get another test.  As for the other two, it seems like South Lakes VA's 9:49.78 DMR will be safe, but that old 17:06.6 4x1 Mile could get a good push.  The question is, who has the best shot?  The Woodlands TX and Dana Hills CA can each boast two 4:10 or better at 1600, plus other sub-4:20s, and NXN champ North Central WA now has three under 4:15 and a third who is a 1:55 runner and broke 4:20 two years ago.  There's also West Windsor Plainsboro North NJ, of course, which set the indoor mark
    • Justin Shirk PA or Sam Crouser OR, javelin - Both have broken 230 now and under the right conditions, an assault on the 241-11 USR seems possible
