4/27-5/4 Notables
  • Monday's steeple special  Not too many US records are set on Monday, but defending Nike Outdoor 2k steeple champ Shelby Greany NY took her first crack at the event in 2009 at the Cornwall Steeple Fest and the improvement she's shown at almost every other distance this year carried through here as she took almost 2 seconds of Marie Lawrence's 2006 mark.  Colin Seidl's 9:25.2 boys 3k ST leader in the same meet meant that Michael Kiley's 9:28.81 #1 mark lasted just a few days.
  • The #1 that "wasn't" There have been many all-time great performances this year in track, but few were more surprising than the 10:11.72 recorded for Hannah Neczypor in Ohio this weekend.  She had never broken 10:40 before that race at the Berea Relays.  It was eventually revealed that the runners were started on the wrong staggers and it was estimated that Neczypor ran around 15 meters short, making it difficult to give value to the time or rank it.  Neczypor may not ring a bell for a lot of national fans, but last fall she was 3rd in Ohio D1 XC, 2nd at NXN Midwest, and 23rd at NXN Finals.  She has run 4:53 for 1600 this spring, but still, an 10:11 is a big jump.  It's likely the time was worth at least sub-10:20, though, so look for Neczypor to prove her talents again soon.
  • The #1 that now "is" The results from the Mississippi region meet that showed 200/400 star Tavaris Tate dipping under 46 to 45.78 appeared to be hand-timed when received last week; the events longer than 800 were rounded to full seconds.  But a call from the meet director and finish photos revealed that the races were FAT after all, so Tavaris is the new FAT and overall leader for the 1-lapper
  • For want of a wind-gauge If the Florida 4A-Region 2 meet had been blessed with a wind gauge, we might have had two new US#1s in the boys sprints this week.  One can only hope that in his state meet this weekend, Dentarius Locke FL is able to show the same prowess under good conditions and with a working device trackside.  Locke blazed to 10.31 and 20.81 clockings, the latter being the best FAT mark this year in any conditions.
  • Deep resume While the 4:16.80 wasn't a PR, Jordan Hasay's US#1 1500 Saturday was still worthy of all-time recognition.  Only Hasay herself, Christine Babcock and Kim Gallagher have run faster, making it the #4 performance ever.  Hasay now owns six of history's 11 best 1500s.  Using the 1.08 conversion factor, accepted by Track and Field News, the 4:16.80 is equal to 4:37.34 for a full mile, surpassed by only five in history.

11 NEW US#1s added (so far) for Apr. 27-May 4
