Stanford University, one of the most prestigious universities in the United States, holds one of the most prestigious cross country invitationals, the Stanford Invitational.  Stanford is located in Stanford, California an unincorporated area of Santa Clara County with its own post office and ZIP codes, 94305 (campus buildings) and 94309 (post-office boxes).   As more familiar geographical locations go, Stanford is adjacent to Palo Alto, California, a city located in the northern part of Silicon Valley and a city that is home to many hi-tech companies including Hewlett Packard, Facebook and Amazon.com’s A9.  So together, Stanford University and Palo Alto have through former students and research given birth and/or support the high technology industry in a big way.

Leland Stanford Junior University or as it is know today, Stanford University or Stanford, was founded in 1885 by former California Governor Leland Stanford and his wife, Jane Lathrop Stanford as a memorial to their only son, Leland Stanford who died of typhoid fever at the age of 15 years.  The university was carved out of the Stanford Horse Farm, earning the nickname of “The Farm” to many locals.   Governor Stanford engaged Frederick Law Olmstead, the famed landscape architect who created New York’s Central Park and Chicago’s World Fair to design the physical plan for the university.  The result was an organization of quadrangles on an east-west axis.  Today, the university attempts to maintain that basic design in new building.   The Given the reputation that Stanford has today, it’s safe to say that the Stanfords achieved their goal to establish a fine university in the West.
