On the Side

The sideline is the place where you'll find many important and fun loving people.  Those people include school teams and individuals waiting their turn to run or cheering on the side for teammates and friends.  You'll also find a lot of hard working parents, grandparents, family and friends cheering and rooting for the kids.  Sometimes you'll find people talking and laughing.  Sometimes you'll find people crying for joy or for a loss or near win.  Sometimes you'll find people reading a book or walking the dog.  But all in all you'll find some very nice people.  Here are some of those people.

Trish Porter and Coach Jim Chiccerello from La Cueva S NM
Trish is a 1988 Olympian in the High Jump and current world record holder for the 40-45 age bracket in the high jump.  Trish was on hand working on the side and presenting the high jump awards.
Coach Ryan Banta - Parkway Central MO

  Bryan Wilson - Oklahoma
Bryan will be a walk-on at Oklahoma State next year.

New Mexico  Hall of Fame Honorary Referee Inductees
Tony Sandoval, Valerye Boyer-Wells and Chuck Aragon (r)
All have impressive histories in running in New Mexico and beyond.
Tony and Chuck were distance greats and Valerye is considered New Mexico's greatest female sprinter.
Chuck's more recent accomplishment was passing his running genes onto his daughters.
At this year's GSW, daughter, Alexa won the 1500m and daughter Danielle was 5th.
To learn more on these inductees see the GSW website:  Honorary Referees
.

Dave Beach NM, Curtis Beach's dad, gives a wave from his perch on top of the stands.  Dave was doing the webcast of the Great Southwest.
Adam Kedge, coach of the distance powerhouse, Albuquerque Academy, with his sons, Eric (l)  and A.J.
The boys earned the medals in the 4x100.

Track Lovers

Sometimes you can find people in the stands with no connection to the meet other than a love of track.  At the Great Southwest, I found a few.

Ross Aragon is a track fan who came to watch and enjoy the athletes. He loves track and participates in the Senior Olympics in the javelin and discus. He will be throwing in Las Cruces for a spot on the Senior Olympics.
