Expo at Sea World

Pediatric Sports Medicine at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children is the beneficiary of the Golden South Classic.

Their mission--"Each year, more than 3.5 million children in the U.S. are treated for sports injuries. To address the growing need for children’s sports medicine in Central Florida, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children provides comprehensive services through its Pediatric Sports Medicine Faculty Practice. The practice uses a multidisciplinary approach to treatment, rehabilitation, education and prevention with the goal of providing care for and prevention of athletic injuries in children, without concern for ability to pay."

The Miracle Continues.  Last year we shared  the remarkable story of how the Pediatric Sports program at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children saved Brandon Brown's foot

from amputation.  Brandon Brown, a Carman-Ainsworth High School athlete in Flint, Michigan, injured his ankle in an auto accident.  Local doctors told Brown his only option was amputation from the ankle down and that he would never run track again.   Read Brandon's story.

Today, Brandon, now a senior, is back on the track team.  He high jumped this weekend, finishing 7th with a height of six feet even.  He's said he's happy with that result.  Brandon is very level headed, humble and grateful about the outcome of his treatment.  He's been moved and tries to repay his debt by helping anyone he can.  "I'm very grateful and blessed.  I will do anything I can to help others, fund raising or even taking the trash out."

Valerie Bader, Brandon's mom, is so proud of how Brandon handled the whole experience.  We were all shocked and working to help him, first to prevent amputation and then recovery.  Through it all Brandon was, at least outwardly, calm.  While he was hopeful, he was also trying to be realistic.  No one knew if the surgery would be successful.  So, he asked his mother for books, videos anything that might help him prepare for life as an amputee.  But according to Dr. Albright, that won't happen, "his recovery continues very well."  Brandon believes that.  His jumping this weekend showed that.  But, he is also cautious and wants to continue to pace himself going at a nice gradual rate.

Brandon's story is an example of the fine work that the Pediatric Sports program at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children accomplishes.  The Program is proud of this story.  But injury prevention is as important.  Arnold Palmer Hospital is now in partnership with Kohl's Sports Injury Education and Prevention Program. The program, called, "Play It Forward," is designed to meet the growing needs of active children in the Central Florida Community. Through the program Arnold Palmer Hospital sends sports medicine professionals into the community to instruct coaches, parents and children on safe training and playing techniques, how to decrease risk of injury and how to treat minor injuries. Learn more about the instruction and advice from the Program and how you can benefit.  Visit the hospital program description:  Play it Forward.

The Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children is a not-for-profit full-service hospital that relies heavily on philanthropic support to continue supporting its mission. If you would like information on how you can become involved, visit www.arnoldpalmerhospital.org.
